He was made deputy in one show maybe others too. The episode that I am thinking of is of a man that Andy shot and this man returned to Mayberry to see Andy. Barney was worried for Andy’s life, so he made Otis and Gomer Deputies. Turned out that this man came to thank andy and give him a rifle as a gift.
