Jim Nabors, who starred in the massive '60s hit 'Gomer Pyle,' died Thursday.
Nabors became famous as the bumbling deputy sheriff on "The Andy Griffith Show" and then went on to do his own show, which ran for 5 years.
He also appeared in movies, including "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and "Cannonball Run II."
He also was an accomplished singer, who recorded 28 albums and scored 5 gold and 1 platinum records.
One of his iconic songs is the staple of the Indie 500 ... "Back Home Again in Indiana." He last appeared at the race in 2014.

He was not the deputy, that was Don Knotts. Stupid writer. He was often deputized by Barny to manage one of his schemes.

Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton (Sgt. Carter) had great comedic chemistry IMO. How Frank Sutton didn’t blow a gasket just acting like he was pissed to no end is beyond me. LOL

I remember him singing “The Impossible Dream” on his show once. I think the plot was a U.S. Navy relief show, and he was accompanied by the Marine Corps Band. A powerful baritone voice. Best rendition I ever heard. I’m sure there is a clip on YouTube somewhere.

Nabors became famous as the bumbling deputy sheriff ?
To: itsahoot
He did not become famous as Deputy. He was already famous.

Right you are. That's an inexcusable mistake. But Mayberry did have a number of reserve deputies.

He did not become famous as Deputy. He was already famous. Don't think I said that.
He came into his own with Gomer Pyle USMC.

Thanks for the comedy, Jim. There was many a friday night where my family and I watched TV together, and spent much of that time laughing. The show was well written and cast.
No one could have done “Sarge” better than the actor Frank Sutton played him. Right after Gomer Pyle, we would see
“Wild Wild West”.

He played deputy while Knotts was on location filming Mr. Chicken movies...................

How many liver transplants did he have?
The show Gomer Pyle, USMC took place during the Viet Nam war, but that war was never mentioned on the show.

Jim Nabors played the sometimes mechanic who ran the gasoline station.
Rest in peace, Gomer Pyle.

That was this guy. Deputy Warren Ferguson didn't last long. To be fair to Warren, replacing Barney was an impossible task.

I guess he was for an episode or two. Barney will always be my favorite deputy.

It seemed that Gomer’s USMC did base landscaping a lot.

He was not the deputy, that was Don Knotts. Right. Nabors worked at the gas station, IIRC.
