I suspect it began to treat trachoma...the inner eyelids scar and the eyelashes turn inward, scratching and scarring the cornea every time you blink.the result is blindness.

Shaving the inner lid and ingrown lashes would treat this problem st least temporarily.

While sitting in a Chinese barbershop waiting my turn for my first Chinese haircut I was casually watching the barber in front of me work. When it came time to shave the neck of the guy in the chair the barber reached in his back pocket and pulled out a straight razor and proceeded shaving. When done he stuck the razor back in his hip pocket. Obviously, from that point on I refused to allow any razor work while in China 😳...
