The Civilian Marksmanship Program has always been a great way to get your hands on some vintage military rifles. Garands and M1 Carbines have been the staples, but the odd batch of 1903 Springfield bolt-actions pop up from time to time as well. Its a program actually designed to put military style rifles in citizens hands for the purposes of making Americans better marksmen.
However, the program isnt known for selling pistols, just rifles. Thats about to change.
The 2018 National Defense Authorization Act was approved Thursday to include a plan to transfer the U.S. Armys remaining stock of .45 ACP M1911A1 pistols to the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
Added as an amendment while the NDAA was in debate in the House Armed Service Committee, it would speed up the transfer of potentially the largest remaining stock of military surplus World War II-era handguns in government hands to the public. The mammoth legislation, which outlines $700 billion in overall defense spending, cruised to final approval on a voice vote in the Senate and now heads to President Trump.

I would not mind getting a mil surp 1911!
About time. We payed for them, after all.
L
I got a CMP 1903 Springfield and an M-1 Garrand in the same shipment. When I opened it up and got them out they looked a little rough with cosmoline and my wife immediately said, “Old, old, old”. I guess she thought my new weapons would be new.
Where is the line at?
I think the politicians think they paid for them (using money they took from us).
Same here, brother.
Always loved “Ol’ Slabsides”... First handgun I ever learned to shoot.
I’ve got a Springfield Armory M1911A1 “GI Issue” from the late 80s, but the safe has a bare spot where a vintage WWI or WWII piece would sit perfectly...
That space must be filled... it’s a moral imperative.
A 1911 was the second pistol I learned to shoot. It was a Colt Series 70 Gold Cup National Match. It is a very accurate gun and I still have it after about 35 years.
I am real happy with my Colt, but wouldn’t mind a milsurp 1911.
One of my Marine Gunny uncles had his WWII Pacific bring-back and he taught me to shoot on it.
Loved it from get-go.
My son loves to shoot mine. He’s already claimed it, and I’m still here... (damned brat!!!) :^)
This is one of the best ways they spend our money, so give ‘em a break. Expecially when the SOP has been to run surplus military vehicles into a crusher rather than sell them for re-use and other stupidity.
Aren’t they supposed to have to “off you” before they can inherit anything?
heheh...
He can try...
The Master NEVER teaches the student ALL his tricks...
What’s that saying - Youth and enthusiasm are NO match for age and treachery???
Great! Now, about those M-14s...
Yes, I have a M1A, but a M14 would be nice.
What we need is more ammo cans. LOL
Never fight an old man. If he’s too old to fight you he’ll just kill you.
I’ve been told by someone that works with the CMP, that they’re probably going to be sold via auction.
I want one
