To me, the best thing about the AR-15 is that it was designed to be easy to handle, easy to carry, light and unbelievably accurate for such a short barrel.
You can sling it so that it is on your back and go up a deer stand ladder like a squirrel.
Climbing the same ladder with a conventional .243 Remington or Winchester, .30-06, shotgun, etc., is very awkward and has caused many a nice gun to be scarred, fropped, or worse.
I find the AR-15 to be almost as easy to handle as a revolver or pistol. Just grab it and go.
For several years, I thought they were an ugly fad.
I now own two and am about to get a third.
Jim Zumba is deeply saddened.
It is the same thing with cars, computers, smart phones, etc. I will take a simpler version if it is proven more reliable than an all bells & whistles gadget prone to failures not easily overcome.
As an anecdote...circa 1964 Chicago winter. After work at 5 pm, it is very cold and dark in the parking lot, and my car would crank but will not start. My co-worker and I opened the hood, bent the arm holding the points which created a gap between the closed together points, and the car started! When the electronic ignition or computer fails, it is a tow truck trip to the dealer or mechanic’s shop.
No blaze orange cap.
Very bad.
My Dad carried a BAR. He was a big guy.
I my Dad’s outfit, he was the squad leader, he picked the smallest stockiest guy to carry the BAR. He said the short guys can keep low and don’t get hit as often. He said everyone knew how to fire the squad BAR. That’s how important it was.
Dad would fire a burst and then call them out in German to surrender. By then most of them were scared teens and old men.
I hunt deer with an AR-10.
I like the fact that when I come home from a drizzly day in the woods , often empty handed, that I am not spending hours cleaning a gun I havent shot.
The AR is clean(water free) in about 30 minutes.
“Modern Sporting Rifle”.
Remember, laws proposed in the past have a ‘catch all” praise that goes something like this.
‘A rifle designed for sporting use may not be considered a “sporting rifle” by this law’
This was designed to sweep up semi-auto rifles used in various military style sporting competitions.
For a kid who grew up in Wisconsin in the 50s and 60s, where I had the choice of two calibers, .22 for small game and 30-30 for big game, I really like the idea of the AR-15 with changeable uppers. The .300 Blackout has slightly better ballistics than the 30-30 and the 5.56 works great on armed Liberals.
I was hunting with an HK-91 in 1985.
I’m sure the writers at HuffPO would explain it’s for Million Shot Rifle. You do know what HuffPo stands for?
I think there might be a typo or a boolean error in there somewhere but yeah, I agree, the term "MSR" does indeed make it clear that this new Rifle I just bought, or maybe I didn't, is a flat shooting 6.5 Grendel that's gonna just totally gonna be the bomb for deer hunting out in western Oklahoma.
If someone infers problem with the overall function and versatility of it... let's politely say that's their problem.
If you have feral hogs tearing up your fields then you need to take out as many as you can if you can find them.
Thank you for playing, you can pick up a copy of our home game as a consolation.
Next contestant!
Please point out fir ne where in the 2nd Amendment it says anything about being only for hunting and describes “appropriate magazine size” that you require.
I’ll wait.
>>Wonder if a low tech bolt action is more reliable than a semiauto. Especially, in adverse environments. When accuracy and reliability are important, Id choose a bolt action. Or a revolver, too. Same idea.
It’s the 21st century. Modern design and manufacturing processes have made semi-autos statistically as reliable as revolvers and bolt-actions. If you shoot 1000 rounds you might see a difference, but if you need to shoot 1000 rounds, then the semi-auto will make that a lot more practical.
The AR-15 is growing in popularity amongst the women folk because there are so many accessories available for the AR platform.
Women love to accessorize...
“...and far more accurate than most believe.”
Really?! I hear it only shoots where you point it.
(ducks!)
I like the modularity aspect. Only thing that threw me on the article was this: “...because I dont have to run the bolt (and) lose the target in my scope”
I’ve never had an issue losing something in my scope while cycling the bolt - at least not since before I started shooting match in high school.
Is this a real issue? Or just a bad habit of picking your head up when cycling?
