Why Netflix’s ‘Godless’ is the Western you’ve been waiting for
Los Angeles Daily News ^ | November 17, 2017 | Rob Lowman

...For “Godless,” executive producers Casey Silver and Steven Soderbergh took Scott Frank’s screenplay, which was originally written as a film, and expanded it into a seven-part limited series for Netflix.

The series is a wild ride, an old-fashioned Western with a contemporary edge. It carries the sweep and breadth of a grand tale with the larger-than-life ornery characters you expect to find living and dying in that rugged, lonely land...

The entire series – which plays like a seven-hour movie – was directed by Scott Frank from his screenplay. He keeps the tension throughout without over-hyping scenes. Death is bad enough. Using natural light, the cinematography from Steven Meizler, who has filmed for Steven Spielberg and Steven Soderbergh, infuses the scenes with the unease of vulnerability...

Your factoids from the last half of the 19th Century persisted with some change into the early 20th Century in the former Old West, in my paternal grandparents’ case in KS. My grandmother began having children at age 20 in 1902 and concluded at age 40, bearing 10 children, 9 living to adulthood. So her progeny mostly beat the infant mortality stats. Her husband died at age 51 of abdominal sepsis from a burst appendix. She died 8 years later at age 50 of cervical cancer.

The infant mortality rates impacted longevity, but in a nuanced way. If average lifespan was, say, 40, anyone who survived beyond infancy actually had as much chance of living to 70 as much later. The high infant mortality rates skewed longevity, which was an average.

You make an excellent point from the actuarial perspective on longevity. It especially applies to my grandmother’s progeny with youngest adult passing at 53 and the oldest at 94, most skewed into their 80s at their passing. The one child death was at age 4.

Stagecoach and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence still set the standard for Westerns in my book.

I may sample this one but from the trailer I don't hold out much hope for it.

I hate it too.

We’re smart enough to figure it out if they give us a hint or two like two people go home together and then the camera pans to a sunrise breakfast for two.

I gave up on teevee because too many shows are kind of degenerate or have an SJW undertone or mock God or whatever.

No thanks.

A lot of research went into that...that was in fact how they spoke. However, I respect your opinion.

Yep. You called it:

There are also surprises, such as when the local schoolmarm publicly confesses her love for Mary Agnes.

No thanks.

You kinda answered this but the life span was heavily skewed by the 50% infant mortality rate. If you made it to early teens you had a good chance of living well into your 60’s. I used to think that 44 was it for a male but when I did a genealogy project on my family - which is very large on both sides I found literally 30 infants that didn’t make it a year and many males well into their late 60’s before passing. Of course the Civil War was horrendous and skewed two generations of lifespan statistics

Speaking of profanity, I remember how The Sopranos was criticized for using profanity. But these were New Jersey mobsters! They did not go around saying “please” and “thank you”!

Would the series be better if Tony Soprano had lines like “Golly gee Paulie, that crew from New York is really getting on my nerves. I think we need to arrange a meeting and let them know how displeased we are with the current arrangement.”

Even regular people from New Jersey are not that polite.

From the trailer it looks like most of the men in town were killed in a mine collapse. Possible I suppose, though I doubt many miners would have had families. To my knowledge most miners in the old west were single men.

Whenever I see “with a contemporary edge” I cringe and have my doubts about the production. I expect it to focus on a super-human woman who can consistently drill the Ace of Spades dead center at 100 yards with her Colt .44 while on a steed at full gallop, then bringing the horse to a halt, jumping off, and beating a man weighing 3X as much in hand-to-hand combat.
