In an unprecedented move, Ridley Scott has re-cast Kevin Spacey in his Getty thriller All the Money in the World just weeks before the film's release.
Christopher Plummer will now play J. Paul Getty in the story about the infamous 1973 kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III.
The movie, which was pulled as the closing night screening of AFI Fest, is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 22 via Sony's Tristar. As of now, the release date remains unchanged despite the re-shoots.
Insiders tell The Hollywood Reporter that Scott made the decision unilaterally and only notified Sony of his decision late Wednesday afternoon. Plummer was actually the first choice for the role, but top studio executives wanted a bigger name.
Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams star in the feature as J. Paul Getty's lawyer and daughter, but there is no word yet on wether or not they will be brought back for re-shoots.
As the sexual harassment and assault allegations continue to mount against Spacey, it would have been impossible to distance the movie's marketing campaign from the scandal engulfing the actor, even if he himself didn't do press.
All the Money in the World is the latest project to distance itself from Spacey. Netflix announced that the sixth season of House of Cards had suspended production and, on Friday, sources told THR that the production is actively reworking the final season of the drama, so that Spacey will be written out. Additionally, the streamer abandoned their plans for the Spacey-led Gore Vidal project.
Why couldn’t he wait just a few weeks for Kev to get treated out in Arizona with Harv?
Harv said he was all better in just a week or two.
No big deal.
Captain von Trapp.
Always a good choice.
.and top hollywood agent working for ari Emanuel has been accused..represents people like dustin hoffman..think that is the terry crews accusation
Just a note: House of Cards is still on Netflix.
Also wonderful in Remember.
Interesting
I saw trailer last week before news about spacey broke. Seemed interesting. At the end of trailer there was spacey I thought nope. Wont see him not anything hes in. Way too creepy. Not since Seven. Will not watch anything hes in
Now I might go see it
I saw the headline and thought it was satire. I was certain he had died years ago. What a surprise! The man is alive and kickin'! Awesome.
No. They arent going just by accusation. It seems to be an everyone knows thing.
Plummer was actually the first choice for the role, but top studio executives wanted a bigger name.
He thought it was too saccharine when filming it. He’s since come around because of how beloved it is internationally.
He was good as the miserly uncle in Nicholas Nickleby.
This is good on an acting level alone and is even better because the one who got replaced is a monster.
Career gone. It's over, Kev.
No more a-listers. He'll have to go to Mexico or Thailand to indulge his particular appetites.
Maybe he can hook up with Gary Glitter.
Just read the Wikipedia page about him. What a train wreck.
That’s a shame. It’s one of my favorite movies.
Strange topic to make a movie about - the kidnapping of J Paul Getty's grandson? Again, who's old enough to remember that and why should we care?
