Oops, sorry: the writers of this article should read “ Ryan Dezember and Anne Steele,” not yours truly.
I have cardboard boxes full of cassette tapes in my basement. I keep saying I’m going to get around to digitalizing them, but I never get around to digitalizing them.
I was just cleaning out my office and I’m at that crossroads of just throwing out hundreds of music CDs. So hard to do...
Same here. The trouble is it’s so dang time-consuming to digitize them.
...and so much is free on the internet these days... why is this such a hard decision?!?!?
I feel your pain. I never listen to my old CD’s anymore because all my favorites are now on mp3, but it’s hard to part with them. Same with my vinyl records.
I don’t do ipods or mp3 or anything like that...cd’s are my collection....quality stays well....
I have several bricks of NOS blanks. A little ove a hundred tapes. I got rid of all my decks except for a pionees CT-F1250.

Gimme a good ol’ reel-to-reel anyday.
Gimme a good ol’ reel-to-reel anyday.
Try selling 230,000 CDs for $8,000... 381 1.5cf boxes weighing 60 pounds each. (should have tried for 12...)
CDs are already in digital format and are easy to rip to mp3 or flac format. I still prefer to buy CDs and rip them rather than buy music on iTunes and be forced to accept all of the restrictions imposed by their DRM.
his is just a guess of mine
older music from before the 70 were recorded in analog form. when you convert to the digital format flaws in the recording become obvious when converted to digital.
so the best quality or this music is analog
I’ve collected a lot of MP3 music over the past few years, but can only play them on an MP3 player with earbuds; or on the computer. I’m not up to date on any of this stuff anymore, and have no idea of what kind of player/speaker system to buy to play MP3s in the house.
sorry for the mangled post
It's hard for me to get my head around that concept. Most of my life, I've been purchasing and collecting music. Now all of it is accessible with that $9.99/mo. It's like I paid all that money earlier for nothing.
However, a lot of the cassette tapes I have is taped off the radio. That's pretty much priceless. For example, when John Lennon got shot, I taped about 100 hours of tributes from the Boston radio stations. I also taped pretty much every Christmas Eve from 1976 to 2003. I also have a lot of radio recordings from the week that Elvis died. I'm sure that would generate some revenue on YouTube once I get around to digitalizing it.
I remember when I replaced my 8-track player with a cassette deck keeping a pencil or two in the car, in case a cassette would get carsick and unravel. Pencils were perfect for rewinding the tape. Fixing a cassette cartridge was a PITA sometimes, but they were an improvement over the 8-tracks.
