The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Growing season over; maintenance season starts. Put in a new bed for next year (10’ x 4’), raised the back of the big be (22’ x 7’ x 22’ x 13’) and pulled remaining vegetation (plants and weeds). Labeled all my stakes for next year. Fencing down and rolled up for garage storage.

Will be buying new supplies monthly. Have some odds and ends to do until January. Then we’ll be starting seedlings indoors in February.

Dug up the white sweet potatoes. Read that’s there’s a very demanding curing process for them- just got enough for seed next year so will research that but it’s not urgent.
So that’s the end of a very disappointing year...
Except that I found a kitten crying in the garden last week and now have a new friend.
Maybe this will go from my worst garden crop to my best!

15 green bell peppers, 100 jalapeños, two dozen little Amish paste tomatoes, mostly green, are picked and in house.
In past years, I’ve dehydrated and ground the jalapeños into dust suitable for a salt shaker. All the small peppers will be turned into shaker spice.
The big peppers will go into chili. Winter’s coming on...

A buddy in Emily, Minnesota has snow coming in.

Glad we took our Yankee money and moved south.

Glad you are feeling a little better!

We are expecting the first frost of the year tomorrow night. So I picked up my green tomatoes and put them in the basement, hopefully to ripen. Pick the remaining bell peppers. Now I just need to keep my fingers crossed that my lettuces survive the frost because we should have another good two weeks after that of growing time. I have Romaine, black Simpson, and arugula. I really don’t know how any of them handle frost.

I really need to invest in some row covers. Anybody know how to make one though? Right now I am using short sticks, sheets, and rocks. It is very time-consuming!

Our leaves finally started turning colors. For the longest time it felt like a California winter – brown leaves.

Oh poor kitten! Well, not now - it’s a lucky kitten ;)

Maybe not so lucky. With Winter coming he may have to be an indoor cat and that means a trip to the vet.
He’s a great kitten though.
Funny, considering how disgusted I ‘d got with the garden’s poor performance, to find him there. Like a “make up gift” from the garden.

Pretty neat trick, growing kittens!

Well, I think he is lucky. After a quick trip to the vet and a quick surgery (I think that’s what you mean?), He gets to live inside, a life of comfort and leisure!

Half the garlic I planted two weeks ago is up. I picked another bucket of Diva cucumbers and another 50 or 60 tomatoes 2 days ago for over 500 for the season and lots more to come. New weeds galore after our rain awhile back because we have had lots of sunshine sine them. I have to say October has been one of the best weather wise. No photos until I figure out what the problem is...

I’m so glad that worked for you. Those Foodsavers are really something!

And I would be happy to send Ithaca to you whenever you want. Send him a bus ticket and he’ll be on his way. No returns, though, LOL! He can be a brat, but he’s not the worst I’ve seen. We’re getting his Winter Quarters all squared away these days. ;)

My garden is just about done for the year. We had a hard freeze last night, so now I’ll harvest the Brussels Sprouts. I harvested and roasted the fall crop of Turnips, and while Beau liked them, I have discovered I really don’t like Turnips, LOL! No harm, no foul.

We harvested all of the Honeynut Squash (small butternut variety), so it’s curing before we store it, and we found a big old watermelon that was hiding in there, too!

We are now turning to ‘indoor’ tasks and since we had about $600 in rebates from Menard’s (like Home Depot or Lowe’s) for materials Beau bought for upgrades at the hunting shack Up Nort’, we bought a new storm door that is ALL glass and has the roll-down, hidden screen. I love it, the cats love it, the dogs love it...and I’m sure I’ll spent a lot of time with a rag in my hand cleaning it, but I don’t care! More daylight allowed into the kitchen - Yeah, Me!

We also bought new toilets for upstairs and down; ours are old and they ‘sweat’ in the humidity and make a mess, and it was just time for upgrades. We’re installing those, today. A new faucet for the main bathroom, too.

Best of all? New lighting for the kitchen! A pendant with 5 light pendants for over the island and a new snug to the ceiling fixture over the sink. Both were purchased with ‘bugs’ in mind - I wanted something that looked nice and didn’t collect bugs...which our current fixtures do. Ick!

So, once those are installed, that will most likely mean painting the kitchen ceiling, but that’s OK with me!

So, even if outside gardening fun is done, the inside fun can now begin! :)

I’d be smooching him and giving him treats every day.

He would willingly take them both, too! He loves carrots and apples, and those compressed apple or carrot horse training treats. He also likes sweetened oats and...dog kibble, LOL!

If he gets out of his fenced area, all you have to do is get one of the dog food buckets (empty or not!) and he’ll follow you right back in. ;)

I only like turnips shredded raw and put in slaw. I mix half and half cabbage and turnips and throw in some broccoli slaw mix for good measure. We’ve done some house projects this fall too, looks like we’ll be going into the winter with most things upgraded. I am already looking forward to some sewing and crafting this fall. I have the makings for a stunning Christmas wreath, as our old one is as old as the hills. Have had all the supplies for 2 years and I think I am finally going to get to it. We love those Menards rebates too, although ours are small compared to yours. I spend ours mostly on their premium bird seed.

What kind of exercises do you do? I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt me one bit to start some ;)

“Honeynut Squash ”

Oh boy does that sound good! I probably have 40 butternuts in my basement, and look forward to using them all winter. I never heard of that variety.

They are just stretching exercises I got from an orthopedist and attending physical therapy.

You can probably google physical therapy, stretching exercises for back and neck.

I have a little handout that lists all of them. Hold on.

Stretching Pectorals(in a doorway)
Strengthening Lower trap and lats pull down(both using rubber band in doorway)
Band Pull Apart(band again standing up)
Stretching Upper Trap, Active ROM Retraction, Active ROM Retraction/elongati, Piriformis and Hip stretch(all done while seated

Cat and Camel,Lower Trunk Rotations,Double knee to chest stretch, Single knee to chest stretch, Piriformis stretch, Rotational quadratus stretch,Prayer stretch, Lateral prayer stretch, Prone on elbows, Drawing in maneuver and bracing with heel lift which are for abs instead of situps and crunches. The last big bunch are all done on the floor and I forgot the slav squat.

It sounds like a lot, but it’s not too bad and gets easier as you go along. I do side bends and twists too.

Most of them are holding position for 3-20 seconds and in sets of ten three times a day but I just do them all at once first thing in the morning. Sometimes I do an extra set at night if I am a little bit strained from working or sewing. The therapist said it was good to do extra if I need to.

My physical therapist told me if there’s one that really bothers me to skip it and just do the rest until I feel better but I can usually do all these.

There are probably youtube videos done by physical therapists that demonstrate technique.

Best thing to do is go to a good physical therapist for a while if you can. The therapist will evaluate you, check your range of motion and give you exercises tailor made for you and your injury.
