The Iowa Department of Transportation issued an important clarification for drivers confused by deer crossing signs: "Deer can't read signs."
The department said in a Facebook post that officials field an unusual question "on a pretty regular basis" from drivers who apparently seem to believe deer crossing signs are placed to tell the animals where they should cross.
"Q. Why don't you put these signs where it is safer for the deer to cross?
A. Deer can't read signs. Drivers can. This sign isn't intended to tell deer where to cross, it's for drivers to be alert that deer have been in this area in the past."
Note that the first deer crossing sign has antlers incorrectly pointed backwards.
Do people call in for their watch? “Watch for Rock”
Minnesota signs all look like that.
Only a city council could come up with something that stupid.
Small Kansas town I was in, they merged two parallel streets where no one in any town I’ve ever seen do that. There should have been a traffic light, but now.
IOW your street in front of you continues as normal, but the main traffic comes barreling off the street East (or West of it) non-stop.
Their solution was TWO Yield signs when you couldn’t see the traffic anyways. A Stop sign (for North and South) would have at least made some sense. A long with a sign that crossing traffic does not stop.
“Hello, Department of Motor Vehicles?
I drive an older car. It says right on the front “Dodge.”
So why do I have to get my horn fixed?”
dang it
[There should have been a traffic light, but NO.]
that such a question has to be asked...
Did one of the city councilmen own a body shop?................
One thing you will never, ever see is a deer anywhere near a deer crossing sign.
I visited Hawaii a few years ago and rented a Harley. Got a bumper sticker after the rental so when I returned to the mainland I put that sticker on the trailer I tow behind my Harley. Stopped at a rest area and some genius saw my bumper sticker and very seriously asked me how long it took to ride to Hawaii!
?
“I guess that explains the deer listening to audio books by the side of the road the other day.”
My daughter was maybe 5 and we went to Disney World. Did the presidents show where they have the lifelike dummies and some of them move. Very lifelike - especially to a five-year old.
“Huh? I didn’t know that all of the presidents were still alive!”
“Oh no sweetie - those are all just dummies - robots.”
She watched for some more. Lincoln is talking and has something in his hand while moving. Eyeglass case maybe - perhaps a note card.
My daughter leans over and whispers, in all seriousness “That’s why he needs his notes - he’s just a dummy.”
The naivety and innocence of a five year old is sweet, and something they (and me!) will never get back. However - as an adult, one wonders how some of these folks made it that far!
One would have to think. I’m out in the town, new to it and all of a sudden this guy with a grin goes flying right in front of me in a pickup truck.
Some real danger in being in a town you’ve never really been in before and certainly don’t expect the locals to do something completely unexpected like that.
I got on the brakes in time. Of course there were a lot of trees along each side of the road, too.
As I was to learn, the hard way, there was a lot of bizarre thinking in that town. Well, they were pretty isolated. I thought that was a bonus; given the Obamanation. The town is dying; perpetually-shrinking in population. Even the locals want to get out of there.
I’ve heard they place the signs along trails of droppings.
Most of the deer I’ve encountered are definitely not at the signs, though.
One particular route I take (less at night because of this) the deer stand in the tall grass and watch the traffic, about 6 to 10 feet off the road. You’ll see a family, 3 of them (one small so it looks like a family) just off the road watching the traffic. Ran into this this going through Oklahoma a few years ago too.
“Department of Motor Vehicles?
On the street that leads from my house to the main road
there is a sign that says “Do Not Pass.”
So how do I get out of my subdivision?”
People often go left for the wrong reasons...
