Well, I hate how Yanks refer to it with the definite article. Like there's only one hospital, "THE" hospital.
In this context, it means a condition, not a geographic location, as in "in bed". We would not say (WJC excluded) "in a bed" would we?

"In hospital" is equivalent to saying, "I got in car."
There are plenty of cars but it's understood that you can only get in one car at a time. Same with hospitals.

As far as being a condition. One is “in the car” or “in a car” not “in car.”

But we also say "going to school", not "going to THE school".
Personally, I find Brit-speak quite charming.

To: Inspectorette
You have a point on that one. I find it sort of fascinating myself. What really gets on my last good nerve is when I hear Americans adopting Brit speak in an attempt to seem sophisto.
Any American that says "on holiday" or "in hospital" needs to be shipped off to Devils Island.

Oh hey, I just checked your bio page and noticed you worked in aerospace at Vandenberg. I wonder if you knew my dad. He worked for L.T.V. out there. His name was Clarence or “Bob” Bagwell.

So how is one “in bed” or “at home”? And don’t get me started on the needless plurals that abound “Legos”, “accomodations”. ugh.

Mr. Inspectorette and I worked for Lockheed-Martin at VAFB. Retired in 2005 and moved up to the Oregon Coast. Didn’t know any LTV people (although my brother worked for LTV in Texas).

To: Inspectorette
Ah well, worth a shot. We are cousins at least. Did you live in Lompoc as well?
