Beyond the smoking gun: The new JFK files fill in 2 holes in the assassination story
jfkfacts.org ^ | 2017 | Jeff Morley

I’ve been hearing from news reporters for major news organizations, who ask, “What’s in the new JFK files? Is there a smoking gun?”

The answer is no. There is no one piece of evidence in the 113,00 pages of JFK records scheduled to be released by October 26, 2017, that will change people’s minds...

But the new JFK files, if released in their entirety, will fill in the two key gaps in the JFK assassination story that have long been obscured by government misconduct, official secrecy, and lazy journalism.

Think of the JFK assassination story as an incomplete mosaic. The new files help complete the picture in two ways.

The new files shed light on the CIA’s use of Lee Oswald for intelligence purposes before November 22, 1963. They also illuminate the illegal actions of government officials to conceal the CIA’s manipulation of Oswald and its plot to kill Fidel Castro in late 1963....

The CIA’s Use of Oswald:

The new files strengthen the claim–long denied by the CIA and mainstream news organizations–that the agency used accused assassin Lee Oswald for intelligence purposes.

Part of the story was brought to light the JFK review board in the 1990s when they released, a complete version of one of the agency’s many pre-assassination cables on Oswald. It was prepared by Jame Angleton’s Counterintelligence Staff on October 10, 1963.

More of the story is coming in the testimony of Orest Pena, a New Orleans bar owner who said he saw Oswald in the company of a senior FBI agents in the summer of 1963. The Pena testimony was not included in the first batch of National Archives releases last week.

The newly-declassified financial records of the CIA front group, the Cuban Revolutionary Council, are also relevant, as Larry explains at The New JFK Show Blog. In his turn as a public supporter of Castro in the summer of 1963, Oswald had repeated contacts with people associated with the CRC. I will be writing more about these records in comings weeks.

Meanwhile, intelligence historian John Newman has already begun to use the new files to develop the granular knowledge of CIA covert operations and cryptonyms necessary to tell this story.

The Criminal Cover-up:

The JFK release last week includes a great deal of material about Russian defector Yuri Nosenko, who claimed to have seen Oswald’s KGB file. The veracity of Nosenko’s claims in the face of CIA interrogation is a key issue that requires deeper analysis, as Newsweek has already reported.

Key documents to come include the still-unreleased testimony of Angleton to the Church Committee on September 12, 1975.

Also important are the operational files of CIA officers hostile to JFK who were involved in assassination operations including Bill Harvey, David Phillips, and Howard Hunt.

None of these files were included in the first Archives release.

Apparently they did a pre-lim document dump or show for this upcoming release -Cryptonyms are being deciphered. There were reportedly 350,000 pages for release; now the article mentions 113,000?

POTUS will likely be pressured to withhold numerous selected documents by three-letter agencies; thus the disclaimer on his document release statement.

Also, one of the major pre-lim files on Lee Harvey Oswald was reported permanently misplaced in 1997.

This article includes the photos of Oswald in New Orleans, August 16, 1963 (photo that 'rocked' the Cruz family) and one of the secretive 'Ghost' Counter-Intell Agent James Jesus Angleton.

LOL.
John M. Newman is an American author and retired major in the United States Army, professor. Currently he’s an Adjunct Professor of Political Science at James Madison University, where he teaches courses in International Terrorism, Counterterrosm, and America in the 60s.

Newman was a consultant for Oliver Stone’s film JFK. He was one of the experts called upon to testify before the JFK Assassination Records Review Board. He has been a critic of the 9/11 Commission Report.

“Think of the JFK assassination story as an incomplete mosaic.”

Others think of the ‘story’ as a coverup.

Not me. I used to believe all that conspiracy bs. As the old saying goes “When any two people know anything in Washington it’s a conspiracy’’. The Russians had no use for Oswald. They thought he was a loon. Why would the CIA want anything to do with him? The only ‘’conspiracy’’ to kill JFK was all in the mind of one troubled and angry loner named Lee Harvey Oswald.

“But the documented fact, first reported in JFK Facts, that a batch of CIA records about suspected assassin Lee Harvey Oswald has gone missing since 1997, underscores the need for congressional legislation to insure that the goal of full disclosure is achieved.”

It sounds like someone may have a back-up of that missing batch. Or someone who worked on the Warren Commission or the followup HSCA or Church Committee recognized they were missing. But that was 20 years ago!

So perfectly simple. Since there’s nothing to see, why hide tens of thousands of JFK documents for over half a century.

You can’t have it both ways.

“Since there’s nothing to see, why hide tens of thousands of JFK documents for over half a century”

What I think the feds are hiding is that the FBI, Famous But Incompetent, blew it. The CIA was watching Oswald at the Soviet embassy in Mexico when Oswald went there to claim he would kill JFK for the cause of communism. The Soviets had no use for Oswald and rebuffed him. The CIA told the FBI, but they did not effectively handle the information, such as letting the Secret Service know and covering Oswald while JFK was in Dallas. The FBI looks incompetent and tried to hide any and all documents showing they knew but did little.

That’s a rather authoritative analysis of content by someone who hasn’t seen that content which hasn’t been released.

POTUS will likely be pressured to withhold numerous selected documents by three-letter agencies;

And considering they way those same three letter agencies have treated President Trump, his response should be hardy chuckle and big raised New York middle finger...

What do you mean by nothing to see? That Oswald was part of a US government conspiracy? Or that the could have watched him more carefully and stopped him if they had?

I like how everybody’s acting like these will be the real thing, accurate and unmodified. At least until they don’t prove their pet theory of course.

Perhaps, but I’d take it much further based on all the evidence that’s been divulged.

My take is that Oswald was a willing false defector to the Soviet Union in a CIA plan to surface a KGB mole in the CIA.

Whether they utilized LHO and/or some Cuban ex-pats, or mafioso, they allowed it to happen and did a shabby job tying up the loose ends.

And it emboldened folks like the Clintoons, who spawned Arkencide.

“The only ‘’conspiracy’’ to kill JFK was all in the mind of one troubled and angry loner named Lee Harvey Oswald.”

You must have not read the book written by the doctor who attended JFK in Dallas that described the phone call from LBJ.

And you must have supreme faith in government agencies whose inner core and being operate solely by deception.
