You might not need a telescope to spot Uranus tonight. The ice giant planet will reach opposition on Thursday, bringing it to the closest point in its orbit to Earth. In this position, the blue-green planet will be visible in the sky all night long and, while youll definitely be able to see it with binoculars, NASA says Uranus may even be bright enough to see with the naked eye.

    William Herschel, 1781.
Named for the Greek god of the sky. Uranus mated with his mother Gaia, who gave birth to 12 titans, 3 cyclopses and 3 giants with 100 hands each. (That's the sort of thing that can happen in cases like that.)

I can’t understand why anyone would want to see the dirty rings around Uranus.

What is interesting is that the ancient astronomers were oblivious. The Greeks may have had another god, if they noticed.

Klingons? I don’t care if it rains diamonds on Uranus, I don’t want to see it!

To: C19fan
I guess the whole star trek, Klingons, toilet paper and Uranus thing is inevitable.

I see a great pickup line in there somewhere...
“I hear there is a planet in our solar system that rains diamonds. Baby, I want to see diamonds raining on Uranus”

Urania was the muse of astronomy, and the astronomers at the time preferred her name to the one that John Herschel, the discover had proposed, namely ‘Georgium Sidium’ or ‘George’s Star’, after King George III.

I told my neighbor “I will be looking at Uranus tonight. From my backyard. With binoculars.”
There is a “For Sale” sign on the house now. They used to be so friendly.

Somehow, Uranus sounds far more disgusting as a gas giant.
