According to a court judgement in North Rhine-Westphalia published on Monday, bread rolls and coffee arent considered a complete breakfast and therefore not subject to taxation.
The ruling, which was made by a tax court in the city of Münster, stated that breakfast does not consist of just bread rolls and hot drinks, it is also accompanied by cold cuts, cheese or spreads, German media reported.
Due to the lack of spreads and other types of toppings to accompany the bread rolls, the company in question was not serving a complete breakfast, the tax court found.
After a software company with about 80 employees had been providing in their canteen free hot drinks such as coffee and plain bread rolls for staff, customers and guests each day, the tax office saw this as a free provision of a meal to the employee in the form of a breakfast.

It’s European’s ‘breakfast’...........
If you’ve ever read any Charles Dickens books it’s standard fare even back in the early 1800’s............

If your employer gives you scratch off, gift cards or leftover promotional items like t-shirts, beach balls or key chains those are also taxable.

How about my coffee, Shredded Wheat and glass of cranberry juice? I know- taxable!
There was a push by the government to tax that as compensation.
Our accountants team went after them hammer and tongs finally threatening to go to the media about their trying to tax an eighth of a teaspoon of ice cream.
They backed down.
I have not been. I lived in France for a year, where breakfast is usually just bread and butter, and Spain for three years, where I don't recall that breakfast was much different.
Cold cuts just sound odd to me.
It’s definitely a German breakfast, which is not much like breakfast that I had in France, Spain, or even Switzerland.
I stayed in a Bed and Breakfast inn in Germany back in 2000 and again in 2001.
Breakfast was coffee, juice, rolls, cold cuts and boiled eggs..................
So do socks and sandals. But that’s just how the Germans roll :-)
