Caught On Camera: Hunter Ambushes, Kills Deer With Bow And Arrow In Residential Neighborhood
CBS Local ^ | 9/16

A man caught on camera shooting a young buck with a bow and arrow in Monrovia has sparked outrage among residents.

A video taken Thursday afternoon shows Mike Rodriguez taking aim at a young buck. The deer runs down the street, leaving a trail of blood. Moments later, the animal died.

“I couldn’t believe it. I’m like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’ Somebody took a shot at a deer right in front of our house in a residential neighborhood?” neighbor Chuck Tapert said.

Rodriguez came forward to identify himself as the man in the video. He defends his actions, saying the video lacks context.

Rodriguez said he shot the deer earlier that day in deer hunting Zone D-11 above Monrovia but failed to kill the animal.

“I didn’t want it to suffer any more than it had to because of my bad shot,” he said. “It moved at the exact time I fired my arrow so I didn’t hit in the kill zone. I hit it high in the back of the spine area.”

Rodriguez said the wounded deer ran off and he was able to track it to the neighborhood in Monrovia Hills.

“I wasn’t up there to shoot an animal in a residential area,” Rodriguez insisted. “I was following up a wounded animal and trying to take him out so he wasn’t suffering any more.”

Some residents aren’t believing it.

“I think he’s got a little fib going here covering his tracks,” resident Robyn Tapert said. “So don’t come back and do that in our neighborhood because we actually care for the wildlife up here.”

California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials are investigating the incident and are still trying to determine if they will seek charges against Rodriguez.

There are too many deer everywhere in Pennsylvania; the idiots feeding them aren't people who live in residential neighborhoods. The idiots feeding them are the Fish and Game Commission.

I live miles from the nearest residential area. Don't need any specialist hunters: when they come in my corn fields, they don't leave my farm. In or out of season, any month with a vowel.

I think that the last words Vincent Foster said was “Oh dear, he’s going to shoot me”. /sarc

Actually, I think it was: "Oh dear, she's going to have me commit arkancide."

In Orlando, FL, back in the '70s, there are dozens of water filled sink holes in neighborhoods. A snowbird retiree took to feeding a gator in one of them, throwing it a chicken every week or so.
She died, naturally.
Cats and small dogs started vanishing in the area... Lake Placid, writ small. You have to wonder if the idea for the script came from this.

"I don't have a problem with him shooting a dear. "

What was her name and where is she buried? I swear I wont tell the FBI for the reward.

So the issue is he should have let the deer wander off and die slow?

That seems reasonable to you.

I think firing a weapon in a residential neighborhood is the issue.

I'm not sure, but I think that it is incorrect to refer to "firing" in the context of archery.

Very common where I live

Neighborhood deer often have trophy racks

They are unhunted

They are so tame though it’s not for me

I e got ten acres

We shoot a doe for the freezer out the barn window every now and then

My closest neighbor feeds them

She calls my wife...her pal.... crying

It’s a prickly deal

Btw

When I lived in posh forest hills Nashville

Median income. 155,000

Median home value 950,000

I mercy shot two does and one buck and two dogs in 9 years after all had been hit by cars in our very hilly terrain

One time soccer moms sobbed and bean folk took the buck

Another a cop had me do it cause he was forbidden to

One of the dogs was a neighbor and they asked me too after Christy their lab of 12 years got hit on Tyne blvd

That hurt me too actually

In Dixie people usually understand it’s the proper thing to do

I’ve mercy shot many animals in my life

Past twenty years with a Jaeger 54 muzzleloader I keep primed....very effective and fast death like instant

535 grain minie lead bullet

Or my Russian .44 smith antique.....goex black powder cartridges

220 grain...also effective

Deer sadly know when you are the executioner

Dogs don’t oddly

On that issue in the U.S. West,...

Animal welfare in Nazi Germany
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_welfare_in_Nazi_Germany

But if the area was a suburb, it would seem that Mr. Rodriguez was violating the safety of human residents. That's much more important than the welfare of the animal. If an arrow misses, it can travel far and can ricochet in unexpected directions.

My only question-is it legal to bow hunt in that area? If so, everyone can go fly a kite. if not, he was wrong to shoot it there. Call the GW ad let them figure it out.

Realistic range with a bow is less than 50 yards, so a stray shot hitting the wrong target is highly unlikely, unless the arrow deflects off a branch.

My biggest complaint as a bowhunter is that archers need to stay the same distance from dwellings that shotgunners do, which in Massachusetts is 500 feet. That means if you can see a building through the trees, you’re already too close.

However, the deer have learned that the safest place for them to sleep away the day is in residential woods. You can walk out to your trash barrels every day without incident, but walk past the barrels and into the woods just a few yards and watch what happens!

I can see keeping shotguns at least 500 feet away from houses, but archers need to get into those little patches of woods if we ever hope to control the venison supply.

Twenty years ago I live in the Elgin, FL Panhandle area - lots of swampy areas with housing tracts sprinkled in between. Some state agent, I think, killed a gator and opened him up. Found a half dozen dog tags.
