The Orville Episode 4 Review: If the Stars Should Appear

The Orville runs into a massive ship adrift in space, and the story, although familiar in some ways, unfolds impressively.

[This "The Orville" review contains spoilers]

The Orville Season 1 Episode 4

You’d think that after many seasons and spinoffs of Star Trek, we’d have seen an episode like this one, but The Orville is proving that it can break new ground even as it treads familiar territory. Encountering a society blinded by self-imposed ignorance is nothing new, of course, but the manner in which this show presents its encounters with other civilizations is quickly beginning to become its own thing. Although the pacing had its issues this week, the overall story and the continuing development of characters we’ve come to enjoy left us satisfied.

I expected her to have an orgasm from the shot.

That would have been funny! Or maybe continuous orgasms.

I can't get past the name of the starship - “the Orville”!

Yeah I'm inspired to risk life & limb in the vacuum of space knowing I'm going to be on “The Orville”!

They might as well have named it “The Willie”!

Then there's the smirking visage of Seth McFarlane.
Again inspired - NOT!
I might follow him out of idle curiosity as long as it didn't take much effort. Into the dangers of the “Big Black”?
Nope!

The bad guy gives the female officer a shot that should cause excruciating pain. It would have been great if it had an effect like heroine. Since it is McFarland, I expected her to have an orgasm from the shot

That would be "fascinating", and perhaps they could also change the name of the Orville to the Union starship USS DeSade!

Thanks for posting this Bender2, I always enjoy the unique perspectives in your posts. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the episode. My local Fox affiliate was engaged in one of their periodic disputes with DirecTV and had pulled permission to air their channel. All I got was a static message screen in which DirecTV was blaming the Fox affiliate and exhorting viewers to protest to them.

Hope you and yours are doing well!

As much of a flaming libhole that McFarlane is, he is willing to take a swipe at his own side as well. And frankly it couldn’t get worse than Roddenberry, who at times was to the left of classical libs.

Every heroic character on the show (including the crewman father, eventually) was against changing the baby’s gender. It was actually shocking that they took that position. I was going to quit the show if it became a celebration of this transgender nonsense, but I can’t imagine the LGBT lobby was thrilled with what was presented.

My general policy is to turn off shows with male homosexuality—and those two guys cut perilously close—but I give it a little slack due to being an alien species.

Sucks to hear that anti-American African Theron is on next week.

Re: Where do you watch this?

That would be on your television... that is that box in the living room with a glass front that friggin' killed my career in radio--

On your local Fox Network Thursdays at 9 Eastern/8 Central... for Mountain and West Coast, check your local TV listings.

And if you'd taken to trouble to Google it... I could have saved my breath!

Cannot blame you, Trish... "Laugh In" has been off the air for a blue moon.

Very interesting... and so true!

I’ve reached the point where I’m pretty much saturated on Star Trek, Star Wars, Dr Who, or any seriously long running series. Feel sorta obligated to keep up, but then decide I’m not.

The first time I saw it on a schedule I thought it said “The Oroville” and wondered why they would name a ship after a leaky dam?!

Okay, y’all say your piece—

I haven't seen it, but considering his fascination/love of Star Wars, I would guess that Seth will have a good run.

I assume its referencing Orville Wright. If you were going to honor the Wright Brothers with a ship name, it would be called the USS Wright Brothers. But Orville? Does it have another member of its class called Wilbur? If so there would have to be a third ship of the class named USS Mr Ed!

Should be the USS Gustave (for Gustav Albin Weisskopf).

Now there’s an obscure aviation reference!

Well, Bendy, I've watched all the episodes, and I like it enough to keep it on the DVR.

RE: "The Trouble With Tribbles:" David Gerrold has always given a hearty hat-tip to RAH and The Rolling Stones. I remember some long-ago ST convention where he was a guest speaker and specifically mentioned that he lifted the tribble idea straight out of that book.

On another note...I too had the pleasure of meeting RAH when I was just a tyke (about...oh...12 years old or so. Maybe 13.) He made me blush because he liked my red hair.

Hope all is well with you!

Best,

Yes, last week’s “Orville” episode was VERY much like “For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky.”

I got around to watching eps 3 and 4.

3 was.....there was part of that plot not to like but generally it was done much better than I would have thought, and I can’t imagine “Discovery” touching something like that with a 10 foot pole. It was a very “Star Trek” kinda story.

Episode 4 was very funny, good mix of comedy and drama. Good performances by the 2 lovely ladies, McF isn’t a good actor but his performance is growing on me. Nice to see “T-bag” from Prison Break. Scott Grimes is very amusing.

All in all, impressed with 3 and 4. Definitely better (but so radically different it’s hard to compare) than Discovery.
