James Corden's Peter Rabbit: another kids' classic wrecked forever
The Guardian ^ | 9-25-17 | Stuart Heritage

But there’s something genuinely harrowing about the sight of Peter Rabbit – gentle, Edwardian Peter Rabbit – thoughtlessly injuring some birds, or grabbing a pile of lettuce leaves and making it rain like a banker in a stripclub, or literally twerking. No joke, all of these things happen in the trailer. There’s even a moment where a badger hurls a hedgehog at a dartboard, and it’s so much like the dwarf-throwing scene from The Wolf of Wall Street that you’re left with the incontrovertible feeling that this entire venture was put together by people who genuinely hate Peter Rabbit.

Just look at Mr McGregor. In all previous versions he’s been a villain – his primary objective has always been to cook Peter Rabbit in a pie – but in this trailer he’s the only sympathetic figure. He’s the guy who comes home to find his house trashed by Peter Rabbit, and his despair is palpable. “Not again,” he’d say if he hadn’t been so utterly numbed by trauma. That’s how much of a dick this Peter Rabbit is. He actually makes you side for the baddie. For shame.

Just don't bring trash into the house. Parents control the books and movies bought. The internet should be in a public space. None of my children had smartphones, so I know it is a bit more difficult now. Cut the cable.

Attend church together, and have dinner at home as a family.

It’s been a long time since I had a young boy in the house, but as I recall, boys aged 9-11 can be sweet innocent angels one minute and cheer on what looks like mayhem and hysterical rampages the next.

Actually, I think my husband would chortle at the hedgehog dart scene.

I wouldn’t expose anyone under eight to this version, but honestly, the mash-up will likely find young fans who will not grow up to be serial killers.

Rabbits are not “garden friends”

In the books he was always stealing the farmer’s food.
I spent a lot of time on a farm growing up.
I like telling it how it really is about rabbits.

Call me the wabbit swayed.

It's not about that. It's about taking someone with an established identity and persona and treasured place in literature and completely botching it. Call it something else. Don't trade on the good well that Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit earned.

People who think they learned about comic timing, jokes, and humor from watching cartoons growing up on telly.

Next spring, let me guess they think this constitutes an “Easter” film.

Sad how things that were commonplace in our childhood have become foreign.

It’s a shame this so-called writer has such a limited vocabulary that he needs to use filthy words.

I agree ....you can be inspired to write this and it probably is good cartoon but the author is not here to give her permission to call it Peter rabbit...give it another name and be honest with where the inspiration for it came from...

Peter Rabbit wasn't a very nice rabbit in the book either which is why his mother sent him to bed without his supper.

And while Beatrix Potter's other works are protected her in the US her agent failed to do the proper paperwork and so she lost her rights to Peter Rabbit.

I thought everybody knew that.

James Corden?

Is that that sausage-fingered Brit that thinks he's the Queens gift to America, with his smarmy remarks and stupid ass non-comedy routines?

Yeah, THAT James Corden.

Don't care.

There’s an entire genre of re-told fairy tales, most with a bloody cast. Nad all the old tales had their violent side. It will sink or swim dependent on the fanbase. That fanbase is NOT the toddler cohort that loves Peter Rabbit and, by the time they reach the age targeted by this version, they will not be damaged.

There’s something to be said for someone casting Farmer MacGregor as the victim. Shows some compassion. I know I curse rabbits in my garden. Little buggers kill ornamentals, too. You know, gangbangers plead they’re only helping to feed _their_ families.

There are always two sides to every story, even Peter Rabbit. It’s a story, like so many others, not sacred canon.

Honestly, I think there’s a lot of hyperventilating going around.
