Estimated range of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in the United States, 2017*
Prevention of mosquito bites is the best defense.
Geographically, the 75% of the range includes approximately 85% of the U.S. population.
CDC has updated the estimated range maps for Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus mosquitoes
by using a model
that predicts possible geographic ranges for these mosquitoes in the contiguous United States.
The model used county-level records, historical records,
and suitable climate variables to predict the likelihood (very low, low, moderate, or high)
that these mosquitoes could survive and reproduce
if introduced to an area during the months when mosquitoes are locally active.
These maps include areas where mosquitoes are or have been previously found.
Maps do not represent risk for spread of disease.
Ae. aegypti mosquitoes are more likely than Ae. albopictus mosquitoes to spread viruses like Zika, dengue, chikungunya and other viruses.

It should be fairly easy to synthesize. Dichlorodiphenyltricloroethane ... The halides should be fairly easy to attach. The phenol a little harder, but still doable. Phenol is extremely toxic though, so any basement chemist would have to be careful.

Of course. But even jr high students know that Hitler was bad. Stalin and Mao killed people most Americans didn’t care very much about. Kind of like banning of DDT.

The Leftist Dems who run the City of Pittsburgh named a bridge after Rachel Carson.
I’d really like to buy some adjoining property and construct a giant statue of a mosquito.

In the ‘60s or early ‘70s, there was a public service ad, something to the effect, “Help stop the hitchhiking bug.” Or something like that.
We’re so much smarter than our fathers...not.

The spray trucks went by our house too.
The upshot of it was that we could play outside and sit outside without worrying about mosquitoes. It was a nirvana compared to now.

But, in one of those chance decisions on which scientific discovery so often turns, he continued his experiment overnightand in the morning all the flies were dead. He emptied the box, and put in a fresh batch of flies. By the next morning, they, too, were dead. He added more flies, and then a handful of other insects. They all died. He scrubbed the box with an acetone solvent, and repeated the experiment with a number of closely related compounds that he had been working with. The flies kept dying. Now he was excited: had he come up with a whole line of potent new insecticides? As it turned out, he hadnt. The new candidate chemicals were actually useless. To his amazement, what was killing the flies in the box were scant traces of the first compound, dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethaneor, as it would come to be known, DDT.The Mosquito Killer
