This morning Ed wrote about the anticipated (and delivered) crash and burn of the ratings for last nights Emmys. I suppose I contributed to that in a small way since I was watching football. In my Twitter feed, I only saw two of the conservatives I follow commenting on the show so that seemed to be a fairly common practice among our tribe.
The initial scoring put them in position to be one of the worst rated Emmys outings of the modern era. This led a few timid voices to meekly suggest this morning that just perhaps the show needs something of a reboot. Whether you blame it on the abject, entirely one-sided politicization of something which was supposed to be about entertainment (a place we normally go to flee politics for a while) or just the continued flood of cable channels and streaming services cutting into everyones pie, you can forget about that. To borrow a line from Pink Floyd, Ive got some bad news for you sunshine.
Hollywood doesnt care whether you watch or not. Granted, this is just the view from my personal armchair, but there are two reasons why this is almost certainly true.
First of all, yes the ratings were bad compared to their salad days. But even if they only bring in eight million viewers and a 2.8 share, thats not going to stop the show or cause the parade of liberals running the industry to back away from their moment to spit in the face of flyover country. Any time youre pulling in a total viewer number within sight of ten million youre still up near Big Bang Theory finale numbers and they can pay all the bills with that just fine. In the new, far more competitive market you can keep a show on the air with far less. Heck, they renewed The Good Place (an excellent show, by the way) for a second season and their finale only managed a 1.1 rating with 3.8 million viewers.
But thats not the only reason and probably not even the largest. If youll allow me to be so bold as to engage in a bit of mind-reading here, the Emmys could lose half of their current ratings again and it just wouldnt matter. You see, the people who organize these shows, the studio heads, most of the major stars and the real power brokers just dont care what you think if youre not living inside their bubble. As an outsider, youre part of them. You know them right? They arent sophisticated, woke, enlightened beings who are trying to work for positive, progressive change. Theyre hicks. The people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know morons. (If you didnt get that reference without Googling it you are beyond help here.)
All jokes aside, Hollywood sees no reason to change. They get up on that stage and make their speeches and tell the same five jokes about conservatives ad nauseam and they honestly believe that everyone agrees with them. Well at least everyone who matters, anyway. In reality they may only be talking to a handful of densely packed counties along the coasts and around the major cities, but that doesnt matter. Nobody else is worth talking to. They wont change because they see no reason to change, even if the ratings for these glitzy displays of mutual onanation and reciprocal applause drop lower than a CW rerun of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The show must go on.
But look on the bright side. Theyll probably continue to host it on Sunday nights, so at least there will always be football. (Jets fans are excused from being asked to think of that as the bright side.)
Totally believable from that crowd. I can’t wait until they are having to say that about the crap they produce!
The clips shown on the news were emetic enough. What a vulgar, disgusting spectacle!
They don't care about what you think because you have never hired them.
They won’t come to my office party. Why should I go to theirs?
Hollywood may not care if “The common clay” doesn’t watch the emmys but I guarantee the network head honchos are sweating at the end of the rating period to see if their season revenue drops.
Can’t continue on a few winners to keep their pool boy and their emerald green water personal parks running.
It is California after all and there is a drought that makes filling up their lifestyle fantasy expensive getting around the water limitations put on the lesser folk.
I guess his Editor wouldn’t let him use the more current term of ‘masturbation’. Why? I couldn’t really say.
I almost missed his meaning via use of the old world term.
They are leftist ideologues.
Ideology trumps profits.
See Target. See Twitter.
It’s much more ‘learned’ of a word. Makes them sound edumacated...............
I only saw a snippet on the morning news and it was Steven Colbert bragging that this was going to be the most watched Emmy program ever...
As a rule I never watch any of the mutual admiration society award shows
The author gets points for the side three of The Wall reference..
They can enjoy their bubble until all the air goes out...that bubble is leaking already and they are too stupid to know it. TV ratings are in the tank, most people don't even watch TV any more. Box office is in the tank, last year was pitiful and so far this year is even worse.
There are just not enough of "them" to keep the amount of money rolling in they need to keep being important. They just haven't figured that out yet.
That is good to know, the market is drying up here so I am hoping they will move to one of those foreign countries, it would make sense to be where their audience is. Really they should move, they should be moving now to be ahead of the rush. I know many that would help them pack.
They used to know who really paid them, years ago when the studios owned them the studios knew and made them conform in public. They have all forgotten who pays them at this point. I hope they are still big in foreign markets, I hope they move Hollyweird to some other country- lock, stock, and barrel.
Well Bye.
Good point. They don’t seem to care if they lose money on propaganda (like the film Miss Sloane).
It’s the mutual admiration society and we’re simply unnecessary spectators.
Necessity is also the mother of responsible behavior. The spoiled brats of Hollywood serve as a proverb as to what happens when humans have too much handed to them too easily.
If they didn’t care then they wouldn’t be crying continuously about no one watching.
Oh, I got it.
Let them stew in their own hatred and bile. Won’t make any difference to my life.
