After pouring hot sauce into his eyes to keep himself awake no longer worked, Army Pfc. Alex Blum began snorting chewing tobacco. When that failed, he cut his earlobe with a knife.
Still, after being pushed to strenuous physical activity for over 30 hours, he could barely keep his eyes open.
The months he spent training to be an Army Ranger tormented him physically and psychologically, and left him changed as a person. They may even have turned him into a bank robber.

I fell asleep once while walking. I probably went 4 or 5 steps like that.
This article does not pass the smell test...
“Someone should of punched this guys ticket and sent him back down.”
Agree. This guy is a nut case. Is this story even real?? I can’t believe Rangers are letting in and keeping in the mentally deranged.
Done it as well ..... woke up in the back of a shithook wondering how I got there... scary stuff. Was stuffing nodoz down my gullet till my spine was snoopy dancing at 100 mph it seemed ...... don’t think I ever got so close to a stroke or heart attack as a young man.
Yup.
Was it in flight?
Yeah ...... just a scary blackout in time per se, woke up an everybody was sleeping, taking advantage of the time......
I didn’t know specialists were ‘senior officers’. I thought they were somewhere around E-4. That writer is really on top of things.
Sixteen months for armed robbery? It appears there is no justice in that state.
Sommer got 24 years. Alex was the driver, so they nicked him for conspiracy. Maybe that explains the lighter sentence. Or maybe he took a plea and ratted Sommer out.
Amen!

You are seriously a Pussy if you can’t stay awake for 30 hours.
I’ve gone 3 days many times and regularly skip sleeping some nights.
Dude can’t fight so, it’s not surprising he couldn’t fight in a war ...
Dude cant fight SlEeP so, its not surprising he couldnt fight in a war ...
(fixed)
He snorted chewing tobacco? Poured hot sauce in his eyes?
Reminds me of the story of the wetback arrested, put in prison, jumps off the roof, got all paralyzed and now suing the state for not deporting him “so he wouldn’t have been injured”.
And the young black woman a year ago who booked a party room for her friends at the Crown Plaza, got drunked up and wandered into a walk-in freezer, froze to death and her heirs are suing the CP.
When did we become a nation of morons? I’m not talking about the cretins themselves, but the courts that entertain such things and encourage other cretins to think they done been wronged.
From the book jacket - The writer, Ben Blum, who is the former ranger’s cousin, has an MFA in Fiction from NYU and a PhD from Berkeley.
Undoubtedly just another attack on the US military from the far left scumbags in the NYC publishing industry.
Wrong. Such Training doesn’t turn men into criminals. It tends to prove toughness and stability. Those who graduate and somehow become criminals later on are rare indeed.
Consider how many go through some of the tougher Army training without committing crimes. Now, compare that to news about those who carry firearms in civilian jobs.
True that
Agreed. Total BS. Inaccurate and fantastical.
I graduated from Ranger school 1977. I took no drugs, did not pour hot sauce in my eyes, nor did any other stupid stuff to myself. I gutted it out and made it through. This guy is a bull shitter.
Major BS. I often had to be a wake and extremely active for 60-72 hours, and I never became a criminal - this guy was just a weirdo to begin with - pouring hot sauce into his eyes to stay awake. What a jerk.
Didn’t do Ranger but did Infantry OCS in the ‘60s. Same format in terms of physical and mental stress and the whole idea was not to rely on artificial remedies but to dig deep into yourself.
Cutting your ear? Bull Shit!
