That was one great scene in ‘Two Lane Blacktop’ when Warren Oates (GTO) picked up Harry Dean Stanton who was a hitchhiker.

How about that... I looked through all his credits at IMDB, and my only personally memorable role of his was as the Proprietor on the Andy Griffith episode, “Howard’s New Life”.
Thought that to be the best of the color episodes, too.

Burt Reynolds once said you could work on a film for six months and hope people like what you did. Then Harry Dean Stanton shows up and works three days and gets an Oscar nomination.
I loved all of his performances. I would watch a movie if he was in it. Especially loved him in FOOL FOR LOVE. Sam Shepherd, the author and star, died the other day.
I also loved Strother Martin. He, too, was in COOL HAND LUKE. All the great character actors are are gone. Current stars are threatened by good character actors.

In Repo Man, HDS had one of my favorite movie lines of all time:
Look at those a******* over there. Ordinary f****** people. I hate 'em

ol’ Willard in 'Kelly's Heroes', The boy's dad in 'Red Dawn' (”Boys! Avenge Me!!”), 'Paris,Texas' and for a change of character the dad in 'Pretty in Pink.' As they said, a character actor who became a star! RIP cool old man.

Just gotta get my wife’s car out of this bad area!
Later on...
What about your wife?
Oh her? She’ll take the bus — she’s a rock.

Wife and I have watched Fool For Love 20 times at least. And we always see something new. I don’t know when it was when we figured out that no one is actually “there”...that it’s two people’s memories and memories can’t be trusted.
We’re always saying Harry Dean Stanton’s line “In my mind I’m married to Barbara Mandrell.”

A truly great character actor is one who becomes recognizable yet people can’t remember the name. Harry Dean Stanton is one of the few who crossed that threshold to beyond great.

He was so sweet & befuddled in “Pretty in Pink” & so wounded in “Paris, Texas.” A wonderful actor.
