Jennifer Lawrence’s Grotesque Spoof of the Nativity [mother!]
National Review ^ | 14 September 2017 | Kyle Smith

Posted on 09/14/2017 1:12:06 PM PDT by Lorianne

Mother, an exercise in torture porn, may be the vilest movie ever released by a major Hollywood studio.

Ordinarily when a filmmaker goes trampling all over your senses with an eye toward maximizing disgust, it’s for the purpose of producing some cheap scares. In Mother, though, the aim is a macabre pastiche of people’s most cherished and deeply held beliefs. Deliberately grotesque and nauseating, and seemingly engineered to outrage Christians, especially Catholics, Mother represents a stain on the reputation of Paramount Pictures, which once produced Going My Way. It may be the most vile and contemptible motion picture ever released by one of the major Hollywood studios.

The first half of the movie plays like the world’s longest Saturday Night Live sketch about unwelcome houseguests, but Aronofsky is just warming up. It turns out that he is versed in the Bible, though not particularly well versed: A few years ago he made Noah, in which the Old Testament patriarch was reimagined as an unlikely superhero doing battle with monsters made out of boulders. In Mother, the Bible parallels emerge as sophomoric and sloppy — was the Virgin Mary actually present at the murder of Abel? I don’t think she was. But then again Aronofsky wrote, or spat out, the script in only five days.

The film reboots for a second half whose even more egregious lack of appeal can scarcely be overstated. To call it “Better Homes and Gardens meets Apocalypse Now, with a soupçon of Rosembary’s Baby” would probably make it sound much more fun than it actually is. To experience the final half-hour is to understand what it must feel like to be a clump of broccoli in a Cuisinart

A soupçon!

Hack directors, derivative of derivers, are seen as artistes in this age of idiocy.

most vile and contemptible

But enough about National Review’s election coverage of President Trump. How was the movie?

:)

Jesus said to expect this so it shouldn’t be any kind of shock.

It will flop and since money speaks louder than politics, maybe they will come around.

I liked Ben Hur.

Aeons ago (late 1970s), the National Review movie critic described some movie as “90 minutes of exposed film, with no redeeming characteristics”.

A character on a show that WBill Jr. watches, had this comment after seeing a particularly bad movie....

"How'd you like the show?"

"Well, I'm 90 minutes closer to death."

That's the go-to in the WBill household, now, for commentary on poor entertainment.

And if you pillory and ridicule Christians, you immediately establish your “cool” cred. Drooling morons.

Nice ... I’ll say of such dreck “that’s 90 minutes of my life that I’ll never get back”. The older I get, the less likely I am to waste my life watching dreck.

Let’s see them do something comparable to Mohammed.

Oh, wait, they are too scared or politically correct to give Islam the same kind of treatment?

I remember Rex Reeds review of “A Clockwork Orange”..”this is less a film than it is a two hour celebration of the ugliness of humanity”

I actually liked Aronofsky's films at one point. π (Pi) was interesting, Requiem for a Dream was maybe the saddest movie I've ever seen and The Fountain was an interesting story of a man's attempts to save his wife from an incurable illness. But he seems to have gone 'round the bend with his attempts at movies based on religious themes.

After JLaw’s spouting off that the recent hurricanes were earth’s revenge on the US for voting for Trump, this is just another reason to avoid her movies.

Not going to see this movie, but I read a good deal about it, including all spoilers.

It is a curiosity to me why Hollywood hates America so much. I have to conclude that there is no answer to be had that satisfies except "evil and stupid".

This is a demented, depraved, blasphemous retelling of Creation, and JL is not playing Mary. She is Mother Earth, or Mother Nature. Him is God the Creator, whose motivation is the adulation of an audience. So he creates Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel who start tearing up the beautiful planet that is so dear to Mother. All are destroyed, except Him.

This is porn, murder-the-Christian snuff fantasy. Just unsettling, how our prevailing culture lives invites us to take a tour of the filthy worlds of Their ugly, evil minds.

This unspoiled bluegrass lass really jumped the shark fast. Reminds me of another movie I couldn’t watch: “The Neon Demon”.
An attractive, fresh young thing becomes adored by the cool crowd in some urban hell.
Daughter tells me they wind up eating her. I mean, they really ate her. Like vampires.

I liked Ben Hur.

The recent one, or the Charlton Heston one?
