The business has operated, under several owners, since 1782. Loyal customers say they can buy door knobs and hinges elsewhere, but they won’t be able to replace the bonds they’ve made with Elwood Adams’s staff on Maine Street.

If it operated under ONE owner since 1782, that would be REALLY impressive.

I wondered about that. /sarc

It would be a front for Torchwood’s Captain Jack Harkness to operate in early America.

That well and truly sucks. In my first and second-hand experience, places like that who have been around for that many decades (in this case, centuries) usually continue to carry or can order hard-to-find items dating back to the era they went into business, and forward. I’ll bet they could get you some replica Colonial and Victorian era hardware and finishings that would take an evening on the Internet to track down. Places like that are a wonder to explore, like a time capsule into America’s past.

We’ve got a GREAT one in our town. Filled to the gunnels with everything you would ever want or need. Owner is always there and always thanks everybody for their business. I was buying some new doormats today and he said “You’re a great long-time customer...I’ll give you x% off.” He hires super staff, too.

FYI, the correct regional pronunciation is either "WOOS-tah." (The "OO" is pronounced as in the word "cook."

I have spent the last three years traveling New England all the way up to Maine and I keep my mouth shut pronouncing anything if I can coming from the Philadelphia and New Jersey area.

I understand that the store resembles the ‘Old House’ in the Dark Shadows series.

She has my sympathies. Worcester is Springfield. Without the charm.

D.E. Turner Hardware here in Mooresville, NC celebrated the 118th anniversary with Jack who has owned the Store for decades and been there for 71 years.

I always go to see Jack 1st before going and spending money anyplace else.

The oldest Business in Mooresville.
