Trump’s DACA Move Is Brilliant
Dick Morris ^ | 9/6/2017 | Dick Morris

By now, it evidently has occurred to President Donald Trump that if he lets Congress do what it wants, it will do nothing. Any legislation he proposes will end up DOA, a casualty of gridlock.

Hence the brilliance of his DACA decision.

If the Democrats don’t work constructively with the GOP to produce a real piece of legislation, the deadline of an expiring DACA program will force them into line. Facing the possible deportation of 800,000 of their constituents because of Democratic intransigence, the party — from Schumer on down — will have to pull in its horns so as not to impale a divided Republican party. Instead, the entire Senate — all one hundred members — will have to work together with stellar bi-partisanship to craft a solution. The Senate will function as it is supposed to.

The probable solution will be very similar, in all likelihood, to the Gang of Eight proposal that was such a hot potato during the 2016 election. Dreamers will have to show that they have no criminal record, have not been on welfare, and have learned English to be able to stay.

If the Democrats balk at any of the GOP conditions, the default solution is 800,000 deportations, an unacceptable alternative to their party. All the leverage will be on the side of the Republicans. Conversely, with a solid Democratic Party supporting legislation to legitimize the Dreamers, enough RINO votes will be available to pass the legislation, whether or not conservatives come on board.

The RINOs will be motivated by a desire to get on the right side of history and not to incur the wrath of the immigrant community and its massive Latino vote share. The Conservatives can satisfy their base by voting no without damage to the Party’s reputation. The Dems will do the heavy lifting.

At the same time, Trump skated on the tough question of how to deal with the DACA issue and stay faithful to his campaign pledges and his base.

He did just what he said he’d do. He overruled and repealed DACA. But he did so in a way that opens the door to a Republican courtship of the Latino vote. Deft move. Good move.

I would rather have him repeal DACA and its done. then shut the government down over the wall funding.

ButWe’ll see how this plays out.

If we end up with DACA sidgned into law that will a be loss

If we end up with no wall funding, that will be a loss.

the debt ceiling increase is already a loss.

Gee, Dick; it would be nice if Dreamers could also prove that they never committed identity theft to get on an American payroll, never took a job away from an American citizen in order to get on an American payroll, and never registered to vote, or voted under a different name.

Agreed I’m holding my applause till I see what happens.

If the idiots in congress pass DACA and trump signs it that will be a big loss for America, and a broken campaign promise

If DACA passes and the wall gets FULLY funded its a big loss plus a big win. But who is in charge? why are we giving them ANYTHING?

Im predicting DACA will pass and be signed and there will be no funding for the wall. We’ll see.

Dick morris likes political strategy, fair enough, but I prefer what gets things done for America’s best interests.

If this works then great job. We’ll have to see though. I m quite pessimistic about it right now.

I think DACA will pass and get signed and the wall will never be funded, but as I said, we will see.

Had the GOP controlled Congress jumped right in on implementing President Trump’s Agenda, we wouldn’t even be discussing this.

Obama managed to takeover a sixth of the U.S. Economy right out of the box with Obamacare and McConnell whines about President Trumps expectations which pale in comparison.

Build a Wall, lower Tax Rates, pass a real Budget and get the Government out of Healthcare (as much as possible).

There you go Mitch. You have 14 Months to get er done.

IOW, to get amnesty.

I'd rather he declare the temporary DACA ended and deport them. But maybe this is smart politics --amnestize 200k of them and, in return, get Dems to work with him on taxes and health care. EXCEPT the Dems have rolled the Republicans so many times in deals like this that they are completely untrustworthy. This could be yet another bone-head naive move.

More than just the wall. End sanctuary cities. Beef up the border patrol. End the procedural delays for deportation of non dreamers.

He should use the same strategy with Obamacare.

Commit to using all executive influence, power and actions as lawfully allowed under the Constitution - to repeal Obamacare - at the same time assist companies (using the same executive powers as appropriate) in offering “scaled back” coverage options replacement insurance coverage.

Starting in 6 months.

Appeal to Congress to repeal, replace or whatever else they want to do to fix Obamacare so that it’s not so expensive and burdensome.

Then step away and let them own it.

No, they won't. This isn't like a debt ceiling or emergency disaster relief funding in the aftermath of a major hurricane. There is no need for a legislative "solution" to a problem that has been caused by a lack of enforcement of laws that are already on the books. If Congress takes no action, the laws simply stay there unchanged -- and can be enforced (or not) at the discretion of the U.S. Justice Dept.

More importantly, it would probably be a political disaster -- and a moral outrage -- for Congress to enact any legislation to deal with these so-called "dreamers" anytime soon. There are tens of millions of U.S. citizens who have been dealing with an abomination known as Obamacare for years. Any member of Congress who feels a need to take up a DACA bill without first repealing ObamaCare should instead simply blow his brains out on the floor of the House or Senate.

Except that Trump has said he will reconsider his DACA decision if congress does nothing. In saying that he pretty much lost his leverage.

President Donald Trump was simply taken into the basement of the WH and shown the figurative footage of JFK, RFK and MLK being blown away..... something similar to “YOU VIL OBEY” or else. He is flip flopping like a fish out of water. He WILL be the man who gives amnesty to the 50 million, just like Nixon (went to China) to give away our manufacturing base, taking a stand against everything he ever stood for.

that’s a fact...
yet it depends on what he thinks he can do without congress that wouldn’t be unconstitutional.

he’s already being sued both ways. (not sure how either side can win)

SCOTUS already killed DAPA(which is DACA for parents) and an extension of DACA with their 4-4 decision.
Pres. Trump then EO’d DAPA out of existence. Then froze DACA for 6 months.

SCOTUS is scheduled to take up DACA again in October with a full court.

By the time 6 months is over, this already could be ancient history, with Congress and the POTUS not having had to do anything.
