I hit a foul ball once off of my ankle, and that was not pleasant.

In Jr High back in the 70s our stupid gym teacher, during a “soft” ball game, had us stand on line to bat along the 3rd base line! Well, sure enough, my friggin luck, a sharply hit ball hits me right in the face. I go to the school nurse and she cleaned the wound and sent me home, on my own at 13 years old. I was still so dazed and disoriented that I had a difficult time getting home. If this whole episode happened today my family probably could have sued the school for a million bucks.

And he’s not only a good solid ball player, but he comes across as a very humble, decent sort of guy.

There’s nothing funny about this. It’s not like he was some POS street thug who had beat up or robbed an elderly person. He’s a decent guy. Even the players on the opposing team were visibly shook up by what happened.

Owsers. There have been a number of attempts to come up with a batting helmet that protects the face better and nobody has really come up yet with something the majority of the players really like. So sad and he is one of the more likable Mets. When he thought he was traded away a few years back he actually cried. Good kid - sorry to see happen to anyone especially Wilmer.
