As Hollywood wraps up the all-important summer box office season this Labor Day weekend, a sobering reality has gripped the industry.
The number of tickets sold in the United States and Canada this summer is projected to fall to the lowest level in a quarter-century.
The results have put the squeeze on the nations top theater chains, whose stocks have taken a drubbing. AMC Theatres Chief Executive Adam Aron earlier this month called his companys most recent quarter simply a bust.
Such blunt language reflects some worrisome trends. Domestic box office revenue is expected to total $3.78 billion for the first weekend of May through Labor Day, down nearly 16% from the same period last year, according to comScore. Thats an even worse decline than the 10% drop some studio executives predicted before the summer began.
And the number of actual tickets sold paints a bleaker picture, with total admissions likely to clock in at about 425 million, the lowest level since 1992, according to industry estimates.
No one can fully explain why. Studios, movie theater owners and analysts cited the usual explanations for the summer slump. There are the obvious reasons: Too many bad movies, including sequels, reboots and aging franchises that no one wanted to see. Some point to rising ticket prices, which hit a record high in the second quarter, according to the National Assn. of Theatre Owners. Then there are long-term challenges, including competition from streaming services such as Netflix and the influence of the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes. How about all of the above?

“How much if it is due to these self-absorbed actors and writers insulting half their audience?”
AGREED. But the LA Times and other media will never admit this fact. They’re in denial. Hahaha!
See ESPN for Case Study.
TS
Most enjoyable movie I’ve seen in several years remains “Zathura.” Pure escapist fun.
You mean they didn’t make any money off my torrents?
Shame...
Come on folks, Hollywood Needs your money to continue the good fight in destroying this Country, Everything it was founded on, and All those pie in the sky pollyanni9sh ideals that made this country great.
The Sooner everyone goes out and Spends their Hard Earned Money on Hollywood Entertainment the faster we will get to their promised utopian dreamland of equality7, Venezuela!
“See ESPN for Case Study.”
They and their love of Colon K./PCism is destroying them.
There are an incredible amount of classic case studies happening before our eyes of how PC companies are destroying themselves with their PCism, Trump hatred and America hatred.
I prefer watching movies that are on TCM. I had DVR’d Yankee Doodle Dandy and watched that last night. Watching James Cagney and seeing him sing and dance to patriotic songs made me feel happy.
I watched Bob Hope in the classic movie The Seven Foys on youtube.
I would like to see Dunkirk on the big screen.
Who built google?
Wow!! Finally someone who believes like the “real world” does on FR. /sarc
Giving out awards that won’t distinguish between male and female will help too. Hollywood is dying and I’m glad I helped it along
Went to one movie this summer no a discount day. It was called Baby Driver and it was entertaining action, plenty of gunplay and high speed chases and didn’t pound politics down my throat. I left reasonably satisfied.
If I get time I may give Dunkirk a watch.
Last film at the theater I saw was “Indiana Jones and that stupid Crystal Skull and Aliens”
I felt ripped off.
I now watch movies on ROKU / Sling tv / TMC or free tv with older better written and acted movies and tv shows.
I watched Guardian of the Galaxy 2 that I downloaded but found it very violent and stupid. C’mon Kurt Russell talk/singing ‘Brandy you’re a fine girl” ?!
“That’s you and your wife. Have you looked to see what’s out there?
Astro Boy and Speed Racer were anime.”
LOL, you and I would be friends...
That is what my husband just said. Well instead of scum he used stronger language.
Hollywood thinks they are so much smarter than we the people, they don’t seem to realize where their money comes from.
We love our Brit crime dramas. They are plot heavy rather than action oriented. And the actors look like regular people not fashion models. $5 a month for AcornTV on top of Amazon Prime which we use saving a bundle on mail order costs. Who needs to go out to see yet another Hollywood propaganda film or crappy cgi heavy remake or sequel?
SPOT ON and the same thing goes for the Broadway theatre!
I watch mostly KDramas. Watching “Goblin” now. I really enjoyed “Legend of the Blue Sea.”
They don’t want your money.
