Google Removes 300 Apps Used to Launch DDoS Attacks From Play Store

Google has removed roughly 300 apps from its Play Store after security researchers from several internet infrastructure companies discovered that the seemingly harmless apps—offering video players and ringtones, among other features—were secretly hijacking Android devices to provide traffic for large-scale distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

The botnet, nicknamed WireX, caught the attention of security researchers at the content delivery network Akamai when it was used to attack one of its clients earlier this month. Akamai’s client, a multinational hospitality company, was hit with traffic from hundreds of thousands of IP addresses.

“We identified approximately 300 apps associated with the issue, blocked them from the Play Store, and we’re in the process of removing them from all affected devices,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. “The researchers’ findings, combined with our own analysis, have enabled us to better protect Android users, everywhere.”

Pinging for your list. Google removing 300 Apps that have been on the Google Android Play Store for bad behavior and are also deleting them from customer’s devices. Malware hidden inside the devices that have been used in coordinated to create Distributed Denial of Service attacks on targeted systems.

If Android users suddenly notice an app missing from their collection, this may be the reason it’s no longer there.

They mentioned some generally. . . I think they named some by name.

I went back and re-read this Gizmodo article and they did not mention names here. I saw some in discussion elsewhere.

It would be so very easy to slip a sneaky Android app into the marketplace.

I have to hand it to Apple, they do a much better job policing their apps.

They also removed the Gab app because it allows all to speak - even conservatives.

Interesting. Finally got my first smartphone earlier this month. Was told by AT&T not to download any apps from an untrusted site. Then was told to get a GMail account (I don't have one) in order to download from Google Play, which they claimed was safe.

Thankfully, I have no urge to download anything to my smartphone.

Geezum, what took them so long. Any 5 performer with a sniffer or access to transient data could spot these pathetic script punks.

Too bad the gargler focused on pushing their leftist ways, they could be honest brokers. Instead we have google trash to file with islam and leftist trash and it is a “A Smashing Indictment of Character” ...

Maybe there’s a lawsuit against Google there. We suffered ... a lot. I know I suffered. I still haven’t fully recovered. I can’t eat, I can’t sleep. We’re victims! All of us. I’ll gladly testify ... if my doctor thinks I’m up to it.
