The 31-year-old Austrian teacher, an avid hiker, had just reached the 9,000-foot summit of a Northern California mountain range ahead of his companions when he raised his arms for a picture and was struck in the back of the head. The electricity shot through his body and exited through his foot, and he was too stunned to know what had happened.

Something along that line happened to Gary Cooper in "Sergeant York", starting at 54:38.

He found Jesus soon after.

I guess what I meant to ask was, is “Donner Summit” actually related to the Donner Party incident.

In any case, I now know it was...

“Both the lake and the pass were named after the ill-fated Donner Party, which wintered unintentionally near the lake in 1846. Donner Memorial State Park is on the east end of the lake and provides campsites with access to several different beaches. There are also various hiking trails in the park.”

Re: “Panoramic view of Donner Summit from above CPRR Tunnel #6 with Donner Lake in the distance”

Question: why in Hades didn’t they eat fish from the nearby lake?

All frozen up? Couldn’t see the lake for all the snow? (”Wait, what? You mean there was a lake full of fish there all the time? Aww, man...Joe’s thigh tasted like crap...and I could’ve had fresh trout?!”)

No nefarious Global Warming in those days!

Lol! I didn’t bother to go back to check what season it had happened in. I think I’m going to read up some on it. And maybe see if there’s a documentary on YouTube.
