A Wisconsin man who doctors say came perilously close to death after accidentally shooting a nail into his heart while working on his house calmly drove himself to the hospital and even parked his pickup truck in the lot before walking into the emergency room.
Doug Bergeson is ready to get back to work this week after surviving a June 25 ordeal that others might not have taken in such stride. Bergeson told The Associated Press he was working on framing in a fireplace at his house near Peshtigo in northeast Wisconsin when his nail gun accidentally fired, sending a nail ricocheting off some wood and into his chest.
"I thought it just nicked me. I looked down. I couldn't see anything," Bergeson said in an interview Tuesday. "I felt OK. I wasn't worried about the injury. I couldn't feel any pressure or blood building up."
As he tugged at his sweatshirt, Bergeson, 52, said he realized only about 1 inch of the 3½-inch nail was sticking out of his chest.
"I could see the nail moving with my heartbeat. It was kind of twitching with every heartbeat," Bergeson said.

Now that is a real man!
I am sure after the TIME article he will be contacted by dozens of “concerned” lawyers looking to make things right with the manufacturer of the nail gun.
Did he set the parking brake, too?
I mean, it might be on a hill.
If I had a nail in my heart, I would want to be sure I set the parking brake.
Oh, and locked my doors.
If I had two or three nails in my heart, well, then I might rush a little bit.
He was hammered when he nearly iced himself...
The town of Peshtigo was destroyed in a fire the same day as the great Chicago fire....only more people died in Peshtigo.
He probably sat in the truck a while to enjoy his drive-thru lunch. They don’t feed you at the hospital for a while, ya know!
... and if it's sunny out, don't forget to put up one of those little windshield sun shades. Don't want to fade the upholstery.
Now that would make me woozy.
And here in the bar
The piano man’s found
Another nail for my heart
Our hospital feeds us grandly, via a menu! I have no complaints after being jugged up there more than a few times with bronchitis. They made me well again! I could breathe again! (I have COPD) It sucks when ya can’t breathe!
Excellent!
My Grandmother went through it and would tell about it.
Had a co-worker almost shoot me in the head with an accidental discharge from a nail gun, once. Literally missed my face by half an inch.
I would be willing to bet this guy did not vote for Hillary in the last election.
Perhaps related to the baby who was born holding his mothers IUD in one hand?
ping!
My framing nail gun is probably the tool that I have the most respect for (or fear of). Mine will never be set to “semi-auto” bump-fire mode; it will remain a “single shot” and I do well enough with it that way.
Pfffft!
That's nothing...... Chuck Norris shot a nail from a nailgun into his heart........the nail bent!!
