How will Animals react to the Eclipse?

COLUMBIA, SC —

Elephants, flamingos, giraffes and gorillas will share top billing with the darkened sky at Riverbanks Zoo during next month’s solar eclipse.

Zoo officials plan to study 12 types of animals and birds to see if they act differently before, during and after the Aug. 21 eclipse. The effort is intended to show what impact, if any, the temporary mid-afternoon blackout has on some of the zoo’s 2,000 animals.

Little is know about how animals behave during eclipses, zoo officials say.

“It’s an opportunity to do a little bit of science instead of relying on anecdotes,” said Ed Diebold, director of animal collections and conservation at the zoo. “There’s really not very much known about it.

While zoo officials are planning to study their animals during the eclipse, pet owners and farmers shouldn’t worry, animal experts say.

Horses, cows, sheep and other livestock that normally rest in the shade during summer heat may come out to graze a bit during the midday twilight, said Travis Mitchell, a Clemson University Extension Service agent for Lexington County.

“There’s no danger for them,” he said. “They shouldn’t be affected at all.”

Lexington veterinarian Ginger Macaulay likewise is counseling pet owners not to worry.

No kidding. But keep in mind, historical revisionism means nothing that has ever happened before matters, unless you’re not white. So these embiciles now have to re-invent and rediscover everything all over again.

I was in a total eclipse about fifty yeas ago. IIRC, it was in the Spring, and we were on a thin peninsula, surrounded by water. It got cold surprisingly fast, and the birds were very unsettled, flying back and forth as totality approached. The black sun was an impressive thing to see, even through I must have seen it through, some type of glass or filter which I do not remember.

They’ll eat, poop, and have sex just like they do every other day.

probably the same way Animals react to a cloudy day, or rain.

But, just for giggles, I’ll conduct a totally unscientific audit and set the barn cams on time lapse. I’ll let ya’ll know how the critters handle it if they do something strange.

They will bark & howl, run in circles and basically act in unproductive ways.

No, wait, that’s the Progs.

I have seen one total eclipse--the 1999 one visible in Europe. It was very cloudy but fortunately the clouds broke just before the total phase where I was.

The next one in the US will be on Monday, April 8, 2024. The path of totality will go from Texas through Indiana up to northern New England and into Canada. There is a block of territory including Carbondale, IL, and Paducah, KY, which is in the path of totality for the Aug. 21, 2017, eclipse as well as the Apr. 8, 2024, eclipse.

The next two eclipses after this one will be visible in Chile and Argentina: July 2, 2019, and Dec. 14, 2020. There will be a total eclipse visible in Spain on Aug. 12, 2026.

Hmmm, better keep an eye on Daisy, my new kitten. Hard to tell what’s normal behavior for her, as she’s changing day by day.

Watch out for scams. Google it and you’ll see.

Only 5 companies are approved by NASA but there are others that have good ones. Be careful of totally phony websites also.

Also, you must put them in front of your eyes while looking down, and then look down before taking them off your eyes.

There is going to be a lot of eye damage this time, so don’t be one of the sorry ones.

Duh! How many planets can you see when a big black cloud obscures the sun? How many f-stops do you have to open up on a cloudy day as opposed to a night shot with a full moon; or don't you know what an f-stop is?
