Adults in the United States are dying from colon and rectal cancers at an increasing rate about age 50, when they should just be beginning screenings, according to a new study from the American Cancer Society.
Since routine screening is generally not recommended for most adults under 50, the cancers found in younger adults are often in advanced stages and more deadly, said Dr. James Church, a colorectal surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
Church, who was not involved in the new study, said he has seen this trend in death rates up close. Last year, on separate occasions, Church saw two 36-year-olds with stage IV colon cancer, he said.
In both of those patients, who had no relation to each other, the cancer spread to their livers, making it so he couldn't operate. Both died, he said. "They both had young families, both little girls, and they lost their father in one case and their mother in the other, forever, because of this nasty disease when it's advanced," Church said.
"It makes a big impact on me, and it makes me keenly interested in trying to solve this issue," he said. "Everybody in colorectal surgical circles is seeing increased incidence of colon cancer in the young, defined as younger than 50."

Maybe live to 120 years of age?
The culprit of Toxic Shock Syndrome is found in disposable diapers.
Coincidence?
Our infant mortality rates aren’t that good now, and we have probably the sickest children in the developed world. I bet we lead the world in JD, peanut allergies, asthma, autism, delayed speech etc
Folks died of other things 100 years ago. Not cancer. Clean organic foods grown the way God intended are not responsible for cancer.
You got it
Anal sex?
There is so much info now on our body sharers the gut bugs. No excuse. People don’t need colonoscopies; they need to feed and honor the gut biome who live symbiotically with us, keeping us healthy and improving our health and mental health.
Shape the biome by adding probiotic natural foods to your diet, and some capsule probiotics as well from time to time. Then feed them what they want: fiber and resistant starches. Eat natural clean foods for at least 80% of your diet. You won’t get colon problems.
What is this ‘fast food’ of which you speak?
I haven’t set car nor foot in a ‘fast food’ establishment in decades.
Wait...are Chic Fil A salads considered fast food? :-O
Glad you're able to still post here, after passing.
Those reading it should be worried: Most dont know the reason...i do by nobody cares.
Please share.
Stupid is as the medical profession does. My colonoscopy last year showed precancerous polyps. The hospital said come back in 10 years. This disease runs in my family. But a major cancer center says l’m good for 10 years.
Knew a 40 yr old died young Colon Cancer.
Obese.
High Carbs. Her own processed foods. Loved to bake a lot for the family. I learned how to bake well, but I never do it anymore, too risky.
Baking is not real food.
Anal sex. Sodomy seems to be a contributing factor to those with anal cancer.
Our infant mortality rates are stellar compared to the so called good ole days. The average family saw one or more of their children die and wealth was no barrier to that reality.
Also cancer did exist 100 years ago and before. (Cancer rates grow with the population of older people).
“...are Chic Fil A salads considered fast food? :-O”
Nope, just good food served fast!
No, the rise corresponds of cancer in this demographic corresponds almost perfectly with high protein, high fat diets which lack of adequate vegetable roughage.
Not arguing with you, just trying to understand. I’m sure anal intercourse is dangerous, but wouldn’t the danger be that you could get RECTAL cancer from HPV virus? I don’t get how you get colon cancer from anal intercourse.
Okay, whew. Thanks ;-)
Rigors.
It’s an exit, not an entrance. A post upthread explains it very eloquently.
No, high carb diets have only existed in the last 200 years.

I take intelligent comments to heart.
THANK YOU FREEPERS!
Agree completely. In out house, we are still cutting more and more processed foods in favor of whole foods. It really makes a difference. We have been cooking and rarely eat fast food anymore, and a nice restaurant is a special treat for us.
