I am wondering if the opioid 'crisis' can be traced back to doctors being ordered to just give pain pills, instead of actually treating patients with surgery or whatever else they really need. And of course, the drug companies would be totally onboard with the pill pushing. (PS-sorry for the vanity)

To a larg extent I blame liberal US foreign policy in Afghanistan where the input of progressivist intelligence agents was to advise enabling of the opioid farms.

It’s not a vanity. The company that makes oxycodone lost a 650 million-dollar lawsuit because they covered evidence that it actually was addictive. Gee what a shock. Synthetic heroin being addictive. Like I said in another thread it was supposed to only be for cancer patients. But enough palms got greased.

No.

Certain parts of the country have far higher opioid addiction rates than other areas of the country.

However, there is no evidence to suggest that the severity of physical pain is worse in some areas of the country.

If that were the case, people that are in pain would simply move to areas of the country where they would feel less pain.

What I don’t understand, unlike pot and heroin. There is a narrow gateway between supplier and public consumption...it is the doctor with a prescription pad. Why is it so difficult to stop this problem?

I think this “opiod epidemic” is actually two parallel, but distinct societal trends

The hydrocodone/oxycotin problem is just another unplanned side-effect of our absolutely screwed up medical system. Doctors can churn patients and crony-capitalist pharma companies can get paid well by insurance and Fed.gov and its massive debt

The street-level heroin/fentanyl epidemic is a parallel problem, due to the failed war on drugs, an increasingly decayed society, increased supply of natural opoids, and of course, the exporting and manufacturing powerhouse of China, who has taken to mass-producing fentanyl because, simply, there’s money in it.

Yes, I believe there is some “cross-over” from people hooked on oxycotin who go to heroin, but its not the direct gateway the media likes to portray. IMHO we are talking about two different levels of junkies who wind up on either path, not both.

I watched a documentary yesterday about a guy who had been a heroin addict and imprisoned and was now trying to help heroin addicts.

I think that some of it is body issues.

Young women were smoking to stay thin.

It looked to me like a lot of the addicts were pretty concerned with not being fat.

An observation....every addict on the documentary smoked.

Big Pharma has become the drug pushers of the 21st century, except that they are endorsed by politicians.

Don’t think so. The DEA was already making it harder for doctors to prescribe pain meds, and continued to do so all through the Obama adminstration. What Obama said usually has very little to do with reality.

It became a media-driven “crisis” only after Obama was safely out of office and DJT was sworn in.

Opioids are very effective for numbing REAL pain
It separates your mind from your body
It is not pleasureful. Heroin. Tar. White pills
It should never be used for any recreational purpose
THC and alcohol are the only safe substances in moderation but only one is not toxic
Now you need a lot of alcohol to outright kill someone
Not so with pharmaceuticals. Death is very easy. Esp mixed with booze
In short one should not need anything to alter the mind state to be happy
For sure the lies that surround the “pleasure “ about junk and the opiate class need to be debunked It’s death and numbness
Cheers. Truth over power

Participation trophies and robots is what set up this tragedy - I feel sorry for those kids, what have they been taught about work ethic, making yourself better, striving and sacrificing...nothing...and now their jobs are going to robots.
I thank the Lord I am getting old and will be checking out in 20 or so years.

Nope.

It started with a law suit for inadequate pain treatment. Doctor and hospital lost the case. This was followed by panic among docs and insurers which led to pain as the 5th vital sign and a requirement. Later payment to docs was tied to patient satisfaction.

The system was rigged to pay docs to give narcs and keep them happy or to put docs at significant risk of being sued for non-treatment of pain with the bonus of decreased payment for services by insurers.

The ship is starting to right itself but this has been more than 20 years in the making.

The real Tragedy are going to be a the thousands of people that will needlessly suffer because doctors won’t be allowed to prescribe opioids to people with chronic pain because of this garbage.

The CMS ORDERED that all doctors, hospitals and medical providers who receive Medicare, Medicaid or any federal government money MUST treat PAIN as a PRIMARY factor and not just reduce it, but eliminate it.

This CMS mandate was an escalation of a previous mandate that providers must CONSIDER pain. Under Trump, the CMS requirement has been pretty much rolled to CONSIDER. But in true bureaucratic manner, it has been rolled back in very confusing language where the government does not admit they made a mistake.

CMS mandating Opioids is just the tip of the ice berg. CMS imposes many mandates on doctors, and patients, and hospitals, and pharmacists, and insurance companies, and IT companies that develop software for them.

The doctor is right there, in front of the patient. The CMS is not. But in the eyes of the CMS, there must be equality of treatment. Doctor’s inherently discriminate based on their past experience and education. It is the job of CMS to remove the discriminating behavior of the provider and bring equality of healthcare to everyone.
