Netflix, which has been signing A-list comedians to its roster, is bringing late-night icon David Letterman back from retirement. The Internet network has picked up a six-episode series starring the former Late Show and Late Night host. Each hourlong episode will feature Letterman conducting a longform conversation with a single guest and in-the-field segments, in which he will explore topics on his own. The yet-untitled series is set to premiere in 2018.
I feel excited and lucky to be working on this project for Netflix, Letterman said in a statement. Heres what I have learned: If you retire to spend more time with your family, check with your family first. Thanks for watching. Drive safely.
Letterman is the longest-serving late-night host in American television history; He was the the original host of Late Night on NBC and then Late Show on CBS until his departure in May 2015. Since then, Letterman, sporting a long beard, has stayed largely out of the spotlight, only doing a handful of TV appearances, more notably in the National Geographic climate-change docu series Years of Living Dangerously.
Just meeting David Letterman was a thrill; imagine how exciting it is for me to announce that we will be working together, said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix. David Letterman is a true television icon, and I cant wait to see him out in the wild, out from behind the desk and interviewing the people he finds most interesting. Well have to see if he keeps the beard.
The David Letterman series is being produced by RadicalMedia, the company behind Netflixs What Happened, Miss Simone?, Oh Hello on Broadway, Abstract: The Art of Design and Lettermans Worldwide Pants banner.
Over the past year or so, Netflix has locked in some of the biggest names in stand-up from the past three decades, signing a major deal with Jerry Seinfeld and picking up stand-up specials headlined by Chris Rock, Ellen DeGeneres, Dave Chappelle, Louis C.K. and Amy Schumer.
For his work, Letterman has earned 10 Emmys and two Peabody Awards. He also is a Kennedy Center Honoree and will receive the Mark Twain Prize in October.
They should.
Yeah I’ve never liked him.
LOL
Seinfeld’s car interviews are good too. His interview of Don Rickels is LOL Hilarious - it’s on YouTube
Do his female employees still have to service him? Yuck.
Last I saw of him he was morphing into the unabomber.
I agree. If Letterman wants to get into the mind of a comedian, Jerry has already done it with his Hulu series. Ditto for Leno on his garage show.
And take Dan Rather with them.
Isn’t he still desperately trying to cling on to the (fake) news business?
Dude needs to shave if he’s going back in front of the camera.
Fitting...
The only time I ever agreed with him was when he admitted(after Carson's death)that basically every late-night personality after Carson were just cheap/no-talent imitators.
He meant it as a joke...though most who grew up with Carson would agree with that assessment whole-hardheartedly.
I hate liberals.
When he gave up “The Worlds Most Dangerous Band” title when switching networks he lost me. I tried still watching but the tailspin had begun. The last decade he was on he was nothing but an embarrassment. He’s nothing more than an amoral rich dreg on society and will probably live a very long time.
He mailed it in for the last 15 years.
I loved Letterman back in the day. Even went up to his Anniversary show when it was at the Universal Amphitheater at Burbank. Had an absolute blast.
Can’t stand the bitter S.O.B. now.
Yea
wish i could go back to those days...
Lettermen: scum sucking, vile, regressive, hypocritical, pig.
Maybe he’ll take audience away from the unfunny Chelsea Handler. From a young unfunny comedienne to an old unfunny comedian.
Like some Freepers have pointed out, Letterman was a hoot when he started out with his show. Then he grew old and bitter.
My theory is that Letterman became bitter when he didn’t get picked to be the Tonight Show host after Carson retired. The Tonight Show was his dream job and he had been loyal to NBC with his late night show.
Like George Carlin.
Helena banker. Amy schemer just angrier
Thanx auto text. Chelsea handler
