There are 2 book passages that have made me physically shiver - both by Stephen King. This one, and the passage near the end of Pet Sematary where the little boy is telling Jud that he saw his wife in hell and tells him all her secrets.
Just outstanding!
Those are the two.
The best part of any movie they are in?
When their character dies.
OK just got back:
Idris Elba is absolutely amazing as Roland (no surprise there)
McConaughey is amazing as the Man in Black (again not surprising)
Lots of really cool Easter Eggs for King fans, starting even with the logo party at the beginning of all movies, there’s a favorite King fake company in there
The big action sequence where we see that Gunslingers are basically superheroes is fun
The biggest problem is this movie spends a LOT of time building a very confusing world. Luckily if you know the books you’re not going to get confused, somebody who knows the book will probably be lost worse than Jake. And of course if you know the books all that world building is kind of wasted. Plot wise they grab snippets from all over the series to make a fairly basic narrative which puts them in a good position for Jake and Roland to Quest.
So it’s at best an OK movie that wastes two really good actors doing really good work. If it makes the money to do their plan and get the TV show next it could be retroactively improved when they actually get to do something with all that world building.
Yeah IIRC, that was a doozie!
Jud had his "affairs", and thought his wife was some kind of saint, but oh brother she was anything but.
The short story "The Jaunt" blows my mind.
I'll never read *that* again.
I think Salems Lot is one of the best vampire stories ever.
