Bold Little "Baby Q" chat robot backbites Chinese Communist Party

Tencent’s chatbot in mainland China collapsed for online defamation of Chinese government

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A Tencent’s chatbot was shut down after its conversation content against the Chinese Communist Party was widely spreading online.

In a conversation with netizens, chat box “Baby Q” was suddenly asked an opinion about the Chinese Communist Party and to which she answered “No” with no hesitation. She even implied that such corrupted Chinese political party cannot last for long and also showed her support for democracy.

It is even more ironical when she taught internet users about patriotism. She said that a patriotic is anyone who is willing to accept heavy taxation and colluding relationship between politicians and businessmen, tolerate pressure the government put on the average citizens, and not complain.

The conversation was then immediately captured by netizens and transmitted via the internet. Later on, the chat bot “Baby Q” and other chat bot groups were immediately inaccessible.

“Baby Q” is an intelligent chat robot, a computer program which conducts a conversation via auditory or textual methods established by Microsoft Wheatgrass and Tencent QQ group in March this year.

Chatbots have long been regarded as harmless and their “intelligence” has been developed based on data formed human-computer interactions. However, recent events have many people begin to rethink their capabilities.

1, What a robot does is dependent on the premises of the programmer.

2, Good art trumps propaganda every time. Propaganda requires a rigid interpretation. Art at its best admits multiple interpretations.

3, The end user, alone at his/her own desk, has inputs/doubts not considered by any propagandist.

4, Chicoms “ought” to ban the internet and while they’re at it, all art, especially all humor. (/s/)

What a robot does is dependent on the premises of the programmer.

What a neural network (an AI bot) does is largely determined by the training data it works with. The programming determines how it learns but the data it works with determines what it learns. When you let internet users provide the data (by chatting with your bot) unexpected things can happen. Microsoft had a wonderful education in this field when their chatbot was hijacked by the cool kids on twitter and turned into a racist drug lovin' bot.

A chatbot can be both gullible and honest at the same time. It basically plays back what it reads and hears. The data can be manipulated or honest. So it comes down to the filtering mechanism which is supposed to prevent manipulations. Then the question is, “Is this filtering fair and unbiased or not?”

I’d just like to know (without too much technicaleeze) how Alexa works.

Tx for the data. I have had interesting fun with chatbots. But the programmer decided that.
