Nashville mayor's son dies of apparent overdose
ABC News ^ | July 30, 2017 | Morgan Winsor

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry said Sunday that her only child, 22-year-old Max Barry, has died of an apparent drug overdose.

An emotional statement released by the mayor and her husband, Bruce Barry, said their son died in Denver on Saturday night.

"Early this morning, we received news that no parents should ever have to hear. Our son Max suffered from an overdose and passed away. We cannot begin to describe the pain and heartbreak that comes with losing our only child. Our son was a kind soul full of life and love for his family and friends," the statement said. "Our family would greatly appreciate your thoughts and prayers, and would respectfully ask for privacy as we mourn the loss of our child and begin to understand a world without his laughter and love in our lives."

Max Barry graduated in June from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. It is unclear what exactly he overdosed on.

Funeral arrangements were pending as of Sunday and will be announced once plans are made, the mayor's office said.

With her husband and son by her side, Megan Barry was sworn in as Nashville's first female mayor in September 2015.

Denver Police Department spokeswoman Raquel Lopez declined to search the department's records and logs for the police report of Barry's death when asked by The Associated Press, saying that would violate the department's policy of not identifying victims.

Problem is junkies have parents that love them since the mom went and was so proud she was going to have a baby! It’s really very heartbreaking.

Think of it, your little one, made with your loving husband is now dead and cold and there’s nothing to bring back the love of your life, your own flesh and blood, your only flesh and blood baby.

All the family, all the friends, all the love because maybe the junky yep, was stupid was addicted couldn’t be stopped.

I have lost ones to it too. You remember it the rest of your life.

The blaming of addiction on prescription drugs has just about run its course. For around half a decade now, doctors have been watched closely and admonished from over-prescribing. And half a decade is a lifetime in heroin years...IOW the people who get addicted today likely did it the old fashioned way: they experimented with recreational drugs at parties and worked their way up to heroin. Dirt cheap heroin btw, courtesy of Mexico, making pill popping a comparative luxury item. Imho its time to quit dismissing the problem as prescription drugs, and time to face the reality that our neighbors to the south are pushing drugs north on an industrial scale.

If it was heroin then it probably came from Mexico. If this a sanctuary city then I salute Darwinism and nature’s law.

First of all, I don’t think any plans on building a wall along the U.S.-Afghanistan border.

Second, drugs are much easier to smuggle over the border than people.

Colombian cartel can place kilos of cocaine in a shipping container 95% filled with coffee and send that container to Spain where it will have little scrutiny at customs.

The coffee is offloaded and the empty 95% can be filled with Spanish tiles that are then shipped to Canada, from there that container with that cocaine can be shipped right into the USA without anyone noticing.

The wall will keep people out, but don’t expect that wall to keep drugs out of our country.

Then we as a people need to control our addictions.

well, that's the thing.

doctors prescribe opioids because it's easy, profitable and short-term effective. then when the patient wants more and more, as is the nature of opioids, the doctor says no.

then the patient, to feed his addiction, must doctor-shop or find junk illegally.

My family is exactly the same way.

I had three siblings and three of us earned advanced degrees.

One died long term alcohol/drug use.

You are in control of what you put in your body.

The drug cartel does not control what you put in your body.

Your pharmacist does not control what you put in your body.

Your doctor does not control what you put in your body.

My kids are at various ages between high school and college. They tell me most of what goes on and each year I have seen the drug problem grow. The best of families straight A kids are substance abusers. It is un common not to drink and do drugs after 16 now. The supply is abundant. At this stage cutting supply is the best way to stop the impending tragedies to come. My kids are not the norm. They saw a close family member overdose 10 years ago and it changed them forever. Trump knows and is on the right path. So many parents have no idea how bad it is. I saw a class of over 100 kids hooked 10 years ago and their parents were not aware. Drug dealers are abundant in every school and attend the funerals of those who overdose to insure no one rats them out. It’s pure evil and one of the reason I first supported Trump. There are many straight A kids doing heroin. It eventually kills them. I’ve been to their funerals. It makes me ill to think of it.

The Wall is not going to decrease Demand for drugs in this country.

And with the Demand for drugs, the cartels will provide a Supply, wall or no wall.

It’s safe to say you’ve had the good fortune in life to not have to suffer a loved one destroying themselves with drugs or booze.,

It's the worst thing you can imagine. Often alcoholics are very bright, accomplished, wonderful people who just cannot stop...Love doesn't seem to help, treatment often fails, and I know it's the same with drug addicts. Prayers for this young man's suffering family.

I'm going to go out on a limb a predict that this was a heroin overdose, or some sort of street-level opiate which was of unknown strength.

It takes a bona fide idiot to overdose on pharmaceutical opioids, where the dosage is precisely known. One would really have to make an effort to be that dumb.

Just my gut instinct.

What is it with people chasing such a extreme high? I just don't get it... is such a state supposed to be enjoyable?

Same goes for some drinkers I know. What enjoyment is there to be gotten from being sh-t faced, falling down drunk?

It speaks to a very high level of unhappiness and emptiness—not only in certain people's lives, but society in general.

I suspect that a lot of people look around at the state of things and don't feel like there's very much hope, or any real ability to improve their own lot in life, or society's.

It's just an impression I have. The way things are in this country—just oppressive. The outrageous propaganda that the Media is fomenting, these Orwellian globalist totalitarians, the way the Swamp is subverting this country's founding principles, it just generates a lot of rage, depression, apathy, nihilism—whatever negative emotion you can name...

When I taught, I had a student who was brilliant. Straight A’s taking AP classes.

One day she did not show up for class and the principal pulled me out of class.

I stood in the hallway, crying like a baby.

She OD’ed.

I did not shed a tear when my brother died as I always knew the junk would kill him.

"Someone who graduates recently from college is a solid demonstration of ambition, hard work, and a hope for the future."

Bullsh!t.
If he had just walked out with a degree in STEM, you would be correct. "University of Puget Sound in Tacoma", 20 miles from the People's Democratic Republic of Evergreen State, is a just another druggie liberal arts cesspool, with all the legal weed you can afford, that, if you show up fairly frequently, you are going to "graduate" with a useless piece of calf skin. This doper was headed into his mommie's political machine, for some do-nothing position for an excessive amount of tax-payer money.

His dealer just saved Tennessee tax payers millions.

At 22 that means a long time yet ahead of perceived (or perhaps real) emptiness.

He may have learned that at the ultra-liberal university of Puget Sound near Seattle. He was, after all, one of those terrible white guys responsible for all the suffering of poor minorities in the world. .

“so happy to hear you’ve never been in severe pain like a motorcycle accident.”

Are the motorcycle accidents in West Virginia much worse than the motorcycle accidents in Utah?

If not, why are addiction rates in West Virginia far higher than addiction rates in Utah?

Pain is universal.

People all over the country and all over the planet experience pain.

However, certain geographic areas have much higher opioid addition others.

I had a niece die of an opioid overdose because it conflicted with her regular medicine and proved fatal. She was deeply loved by all so this was a tragic accident due to her serious medical problems.

However, this young man, Max Barry, had just graduated from college so he had everything to live for. There must be some logical reason he took drugs. Perhaps we will never know, but I want to ask a question.

He went to the Un. of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington State. Washington State, esp. Seattle, and neighboring Vancouver, Canada, are known as the drug capitals of their respective areas, so did the drug that killed Barry come from foreign sources?

Vancouver was known for decades as the Red Chinese drug (heroin/Opium) conduit to North America, esp. the US/West Coast.

I saw this carnage when I worked in Seattle for a week in 1995, not far from the Un. of Washington, where drugged out kids just lay on the sidewalks. I hear that the situation is now at epidemic proportions form both opioids and heroin.

And where do some of the killing elements of drugs, such as Fentanyl, come from? Red China. The communists have been a producer and supplier of heroin/opium drugs to the West since the communists took over in 1949. It is a weapon against the youth of the West as well as a cash cow for them.

Ironically, I found a small booklet on this very topic while searching my library for something else. Entitled “The Illicit Narcotic Trade of the Chinese Communists”,1957, Republic of China, Asian Peoples’ Anti-Communist League. On Page 25, chapter “Opium Export and the International United Front of the Chinese Communists”, they wrote the following:
The amount Chinese Communist get at present from opium export is sufficiently large. One estimate gives an annually receipt around US$400,000,000. From its export of drugs to the United States alone its value reaches an annually sum of over 50,000,000 US Dollars. This income, a major portion of which it is used to pay the expenses for securing the overseas united front” (typed as written in the book).

When I was a journalist in Taiwan in 1971, I interviewed a key Red Guard officer, Ru Shu Wren, who was a bodyguard of Mao Tse-tung during his 1956 Yangtze River swim (I believe it appeared in LIFE magazine as a story).

As a Mao bodyguard, he had a special travel pass that let him go anywhere he wanted in Red China, including Yunnan Province on the No. Vietnamese border. Yunnan was the poppy growing center of Red China, the sap of which was refined to a high heroin content for export.

He saw the factory that made the specially shaped shipping boxes (that I had seen in photos from heroin seizures in Hong Kong and Amsterdam/Netherlands from other sources).

He was able to give me the brand names that were burned into these boxes (Golden Lion, Red Star and some Double O symbol). While he was not able to go to a heroin facility, he did see the poppy fields through the areas in Yunnan that he travelled through.

Now this fits in with information I helped, indirectly, to uncover about Communist heroin smuggling into So. Vietnam, when I was a journalist there. I asked a question of a very high-ranking No. Vietnamese military officer about events in No. Vietnam, and his answer about social discontent in 1965 (right at the time of Hanoi’s big invasion of So. Vietnam (Ia Drang Valley, Ashua Valley, etc),led U.S. intelligence officers to look further into this subject.

They found that because U.S. aircraft had been bombing the rail-lines and Ho Chi Minh Trail in No. Vietnam, the local aboriginal peoples (related to the general group term Montagnards - hill peoples), were getting hit, so they started to attack NVA supply convoys so as to drive them away from tribal areas.

Out of this investigation came a report that the No. Vietnamese were using the railroads on the western part of No. Vietnam to transport heroin down near So. Vietnam’s border for smuggling into the major cities (Nha Trang, Camron Bay, and Saigon, etc.) for sale to American troops.

Some of our aircraft attacked such a train and destructed it, purely as a target of opportunity, not because they had any knowledge of what they were carrying. As a result of this airstrike (and possibly others), Hanoi changed its shipping tactics to small boats coming down the eastern coast of No. Vietnam to So. Vietnam.

While I was in Saigon, military and diplomatic personnel, as well as fellow journalists, told me that the street heroin in Saigon could go as high as 90-95% in purity, as opposed to the Laotian %5-10 purity (A lot of heroin in Laos came from Communist occupied areas in the NE and Central regions of Laos, where they had control of a number of Meo tribes who grew the poppies).

In order to reach a purity of 90-95%, you had to have major chemical processing facilities in order to refine out the impurities in several runs through. You could not do this in the hills of Laos, only in Red China and possibly northern Vietnam.

You literally don’t see anything in the newspapers about Fentanyl, a powerful/deadlychemical ingredient for adding to addicting drugs, which is produced en masse in Red China.

I wonder if the tragic death of Max Barry was do to something other than just a opioid overdose and where did he get the drugs, what were their chemical composition, and where did they come from if they contained Fentanyl.

There are a lot of questions that need to be answered here but don’t count on the liberal press to pursue it much further (unless being the son of a decent-sized US city is a spur to real investigative reporter on where these drugs are coming from, both domestically and from foreign sources).

I wish the family comfort for their loss, but maybe they can use it to help save other lives by delving further into how their son got these drugs, and why did he use them.

This is an issue that is non-partisan. It is a matter of life and death for our children, relatives, friends, and strangers.

It is time that we stopped this drug war on America.
