How Mexico said no mas to Taco Bell: report
NOLA.com ^ | July 26, 2017 | Ann Maloney

The "wildly inauthentic" names for their dishes is just one of the reasons that restaurant chain, Taco Bell, can't seem to find purchase in Mexico.

The first Taco Bells in Mexico closed down fewer than two years "and the chain retreated back across the border," according to the piece, which offers "a history of Taco Bell’s failed attempts to open locations in Mexico."

A second foray was equally unsuccessful.

The piece is an interesting look at what happens when a U.S. company tries to bring its Americanized versions of a cuisine to that food's homeland.

"Today, the idea of a Taco Bell in Mexico has become something of a joke. There's even a Facebook page for a non-existent Taco Bell in Mexico City that has a one-star review and is littered with comments deriding the chain," according to the Munchies.

In the end, it hasn't hurt the Taco Bell, which plans to have "9,000 restaurants in more than 40 countries by 2022," according to a company spokesman.

And, like other chains, Taco Bell is teaming up with a car service.

The New York Times reports that the "fast-food chain is beginning a venture with the ride-sharing company this week that will allow Lyft passengers to request rides that incorporate a stop at a Taco Bell drive-through between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m."

.....there was a hamburger chain there called Wimpy.....

I wonder if they took that name from the character "Wimpy" in the old Popeye Comics?

Isn’t Taco Bell the Mexican phone company?

If you can get authentic Mexican food, why spend your hard earned Pesos at Taco Bell?

We have Mexican family friends who simply adore Taco Bel. There aren’t really known to be all that great here and another Latin buddy who sometimes chances it gets “horrifically ill” from it every time.

Food franchises would probably hurt their local food industry. I was amazed to see huge numbers of guys walking around with a tray on a string around their neck selling tacos. They were kept warm by a candle or sterno under the tray. A whole family, including grandparents, kids and a baby or two would ride around in a Toyota Corolla with four foot long loudspeakers mounted to the roof touting fried pork fat; which was sold from a cooler in the trunk. You’d flag them down and the whole family would get out of the car. Amazing. (None of these things would be legal here as they’d need a business license, paperwork, approvals, permits, health inspections, withholding, bonds...etc.) Still, I never got sick and I suspect Mexicans can eat like my tomcat. Food dead three days? Doesn’t matter...

I worked at a Taco Bell in Santa Barbara in the 60s. Every taco was weighed to make sure that no more than one ounce of “meat” was on it. I write “meat” because it was really a hamburger/oatmeal blend. On the other hand everything on the menu, tacos, tostadas red and green burritos and cup of refried beans was 19 cents. Four tacos and a Pepsi (no Coke) for a dollar.

Mexican food in the USA is nothing like real Mexican food. I have traveled 7 years around Mexico [on and off] studying the cuisine.

But American food in Mexico is nothing like American food.

Difference between us and them?: We’re capitalists. We’ll allow a business to thrive if it gains a following. They are driven by purity [and maybe hatred of us] and will take it out to prove their dislike of us.

If you want a decent pizza in Italy, there’s always Dominos.

No.

We Americans are different. We allow a business to stay open and either thrive or perish. We’re unabashed Capitalists! We have NO test for authenticity. If the public likes it and buys it, COOL!

Unlike Mexicans, who were trying to make a point their cuisine is “better”, we allow the market to decide. They are openly anti-American.

Their “food” (can you call it food ?) is nothing like real Mexican food...

Agree.

You don't even get a case of Montezuma's Revenge from eating the lettuce. Not even close to authentic.

And, even Mexican children cannot drink the foul water from the taps in Mexico. A constant view of Mexico is a Mexican child [infant] dragging around a glass bottled Coca Cola.

Fabulous Mexican food is sold on the streets of LA daily.

Sadly, they are not advanced enough business-wise to market it.

No quiera Taco Bell.

Remember the pronunciation key on the menu? Some had trouble saying taco or burrito. I saw one still around at a Bell in the early 80s.

“Mexican” food isn’t Mexican, either.

Crispy tacos - oops, that originated in Texas
Nachos - again, Texas
Chili con queso and chili con carne - both from Texas
Fajitas - yep, Texan
cabrito and barbacoa - Texan
cumin spice - it’s Indian and rarely used in Mexico

“If I am stopped up it is the first place I go, to go.”

Reminds me of a time when my wife was recovering from abdominal surgery, and her bowel was taking its time starting up again. I’ll spare you the details, but success was due to a TB burrito supreme with green sauce.

This reminds me when they opened a Red Lobster in Hyannis on the Cape. That was doomed from the beginning.
