The "wildly inauthentic" names for their dishes is just one of the reasons that restaurant chain, Taco Bell, can't seem to find purchase in Mexico.
The first Taco Bells in Mexico closed down fewer than two years "and the chain retreated back across the border," according to the piece, which offers "a history of Taco Bells failed attempts to open locations in Mexico."
A second foray was equally unsuccessful.
The piece is an interesting look at what happens when a U.S. company tries to bring its Americanized versions of a cuisine to that food's homeland.
"Today, the idea of a Taco Bell in Mexico has become something of a joke. There's even a Facebook page for a non-existent Taco Bell in Mexico City that has a one-star review and is littered with comments deriding the chain," according to the Munchies.
In the end, it hasn't hurt the Taco Bell, which plans to have "9,000 restaurants in more than 40 countries by 2022," according to a company spokesman.
And, like other chains, Taco Bell is teaming up with a car service.
The New York Times reports that the "fast-food chain is beginning a venture with the ride-sharing company this week that will allow Lyft passengers to request rides that incorporate a stop at a Taco Bell drive-through between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m."

Guess they didn’t win the “Franchise Wars” after all.
Who knows why it is Taco “Bell” and not Taco Joe or Taco Bingo or whatever.
Answer to follow. At some point.
The founder was a guy Bell as I remember and he opened the first one in Downey CA in ‘62. We thought it was pretty good at the time.
“Let’s blow this guy.”
“AWAY!!!! It’s ‘Let’s blow this guy, away!’”
Mexicans can put their own chewed cat food on a tortilla. Why would they need Taco Bell to do it?
++++
Close enough. That guy was Glen Bell. I met him long ago.
When I was at Domino’s, we were told we were the third largest franchise in Mexico, behind Walmart and Mcdonald’s.
So don’t open Taco Bells in Mexico. Lesson learned!
Well, there go my retirement plans. Maybe I’ll open that Chevy Nova dealership I was thinking about.
There’s actually a pretty good chain based in Cheyenne Wyoming, and across the Midwest called Taco John’s.
Taco Bell is pretty good if one orders the healthier selections. It depends on the franchiser. Near here (just south of Cleveland), one is terrific and another is just plain awful.
Not surprising Taco Bell can’t make it work in Mexico...
Their “food” (can you call it food ?) is nothing like real Mexican food...
And “Chinese Fortune cookies” are an American invention as well...
Whoop de doo if Mexico don’t like Taco Bell, If I am stopped up it is the first place I go, to go.
When I visited England several years ago, there was a hamburger chain there called Wimpy—and their burgers lived up to the name. If Wimpy tried to open eateries in the US, their Anglicized burgers would probably suffer the same fate as Taco Bell’s Americanized tacos did in Mexico.
