For Minor-League Baseball Team, the Solar Eclipse Will Take the Field

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes will start their baseball game Aug. 21 at precisely 9:35 a.m. local time, but will pause after one inning — then, NASA representatives will come out, the home team, visitors, staff and spectators will put on their eclipse glasses, and the stadium will be plunged into darkness.

As a total solar eclipse passes across the United States on Aug. 21, activity will grind to a halt as the sky darkens. But in Keizer, Oregon, the minor-league baseball team is prepared — three-day eclipse festival, NASA livestream on the Jumbotron, special uniforms and all.

"We ordered thousands and thousands of glasses because we want to make sure people are taken care of," said Lisa Walker, a co-owner and general manager of the Volcanoes. "We'll pause the game in due time so that people can prepare, be positioned. [It] will be probably 20 minutes at the least that we are paused, just for the full effect,"....

When the team management realized their stadium was in the path of the total solar eclipse, they reached out to the Northwest League to ask whether they could host home games on those specific dates to take advantage of the upcoming totality. They then teamed up with NASA to develop a full program of events for the weekend.

Ah yes the bane of eclipse watching. In 1979 I flew to Winnipeg to watch a total solar eclipse. The forecast was iffy but when it arrived the sky was clear enough. Worth the journey if you view it safely. Partial eclipses are interesting but you really want to be as close to the centre of the eclipse path as possible.

The Greenville Drive (low A Red Sox) has moved their game on 8-21 to a day game for the eclipse. Fluor Field should be rocking in South Carolina.

A side note, many schools in SC have cancelled classes that day. I guess the potential liability for a kid's eye injury outweighs the educational value of the event.

Our son lives right in the path near Greenville. His wife teaches at a local high school and they are extending the school day to keep the kids there for the event. We’re driving in on Friday in our motorhome - we made our campground reservations right after Christmas. I imagine it will be a parking lot everywhere. We’ll be taking the back roads to our son’s house for the viewing.

It's Western Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest. Think Seattle and rain. If you want rain free, go to Eastern Oregon, which is a desert. But, I hope you have your hotel booked because they have been sold out along the eclipse route for months now.
