Oh well, I still believe in the song “Rock and Roll is King” by ELO.

Ugh.

I hate that crappy noise.

It all sounds like war drums from old Tarzan movies.

All I hear when “Hip Hop” is blaring is the sound of young angry African Americans yelling scary crap.

Hip Hop is NOT music...it’s bitchin’ about cops, and whitey, to a drumbeat. It’s an “accepted” way of saying what would be frowned upon if spoken normally.

I play four instruments, over my life I’ve been in several bands, and hip hop - while being the most ‘promoted’ theme right now, will never replace rock and roll.

Too bad they don’t track how many of us still listen to oldies on a daily basis.

What happened to Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Tschaikowsky?

What happened to Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Raphael?

What happened to Shakespeare, Goethe, Milton, Heine, Dante, Petrarch, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky?

The so-called music mirrors the degraded state of the language. People speak in chunks now. It’s all — look, it’s — kinda, sorta, really, really, at the end of the day, REALLY kind of — I dunno.

Somewhere on the list of obsolete jobs, after lamplighter: lyricist.

Hip-hop artists can't rest on this, though—HuffPo also notes that their current dominance "was helped by the release of more than a few dominant albums between January and June, like Drake’s 'More Life,' Migos’ 'Culture,' Future’s 'Future' and Kendrick Lamar’s 'Damn.'"

Dumb article. A few hit hip hop albums released over a six month period do not a trend make.

I did my own study, and did you know that basketball and baseball have overtaken football as the most watched sport in the USA? Yep, more people attended basketball and baseball games, or watched them on TV, than football games during the first six months of 2017.

Hip-hop dominates online streaming, which is also the medium affected by rampant click fraud. See https://qz.com/615359/steady-chunks-of-money-are-being-quietly-illicitly-stolen-from-music-streaming/

There is no real music anymore. There’s rap with a drum machine, there’s sample loops, keyboards making noises from cheesy video games, and Autotune. Hip hop and EDM has been the death of music.

People listen to their Rock favorites for years, until the vinyl or CD needs replacement. People listen to excuses for music a few times and toss them. So, how do sales reflect actual popularity?

Keep in mind that the quality of vinyl has completely greatly over the past few years. That means those who listen to real music have to replace it less often.

Thanks largely to my local public library "consortium" and the magic of CD-Rs I've amassed a music library of about 5,500 songs.About 90% are from the 60's,5% from the 50's,3% from the 80's and the rest from other times.

My collection is mainly pop/rock...but also includes classical, country and "easy listening" (my parents' music) and instrumentals (from the 50's/60's).

There hasn't been a single song that I've heard released in the last 15-20 years that's worth a damn thing IMO (except "Gangnam Style" and "Happy").

As a result I haven't bought any music in decades.People like me just might be part of the reason why hip hop is now selling more than rock.

Together, rock and hip hop make up 48% of the retail market. How about the remaing 52%?

Article doesn’t mention revenue value breakdown. Is it unit count or dollar count.

Sources: Maxim and Huffpo.... Yeah, ok
