Hip-Hop Has Officially Dethroned Rock 'n' Roll as America's Most Popular Music

If Drake looks smug and Dave Grohl looks a little stricken in the photos above, there's a good reason: Nielsen tracking indicates hip-hop and R&B have officially become the most dominant form of popular music in the United States for the first time ever.

As HuffPo reports, the reason for hip-hop's supremacy—25 percent of the retail music market over 23 percent for rock—may not be a big surprise.

The reason for hip-hop and R&B overtaking rock is simple: online streaming. When it comes to album sales, rock continues to dominate, claiming 43 percent of physical album sales and 37 percent of digital album sales.

But R&B and hip-hop have come to utterly dominate the online streaming market, where they make up 29 percent of all songs streamed online ― that’s almost the exact same amount as rock and pop combined.

It makes sense. Who is releasing Rock and Roll music now a days???? Nobody. There hasn’t been a Rock and Roll band since 1980’s. So not a shock that Hip Hop is the number 1 music selection.....they have expanded what Hip Hop means as well with helps getting to number 1.

***It died when the Beatles came over***

Agreed. I am still enjoying 1930s and ‘40s Big Band sounds, 1950s Rock and roll.

Try traveling through the Oklahoma Panhandle during the day. I thought my FM radio had died. AM not much better. Must take CDs. Different at night.

I’ll believe this when The Beach Boys do a rap record.

Hip Hop does not make money by selling music to black kids, hip hop makes money by selling to white kids.

about 20 years ago there was wide acceptance of rap and hip hop amongst white kids and it continues. i believe that change in tastes or music preferences makes rock and roll less appealing. I think music always evolves and I am writing a futuristic story in which I call the popular music Street Beat. A blend of R+B and Rap and soul.

I see a continuing popularity of girl pop stars. They are role models (for good or bad) for the pre-and early teens and they stay with their favorites as they grow older, witness Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. Young girls have more disposable money from parents and they spend it on music, fashion, and movies.

ButI also think older folks in 20s will stay with that they have. Many of us still listen to what we did in HS and dance the same way. Street Beat will be created by younger black artists and a few white artists who can sing and dance and have swagger. Blacks always the trend in dancing.

I would like to see more classics revivals as Gaga did with Tony Bennnet. Jennifer Hudson is a shoe in for the Aretha Franklin bio-flick and could usher in a renewal of R+B and soul. I wish she would put out more dance tunes and see how that goes. She’s the best singer out there for my money. i think Mariah is drying up, but she is young enough to comeback with an older audience and maybe new style.

Just a few opinions.

Problem I now have is modern radios. Too many buttons that do too many things. I would rather drive in silence than have a wreck while trying to work some new fangled radio. I got hit many years ago by some guy doing that.
Got a good station not long ago, accidentally pushed some button I thought was the sound and the station disappeared. Never found it or the frequency again.

A word of advice: do not bring CDs of Gregorian chant to listen to while you are taking turns driving during the night. Take my word on this.

A lot of people here get upset and angry when I talk about it but Sirius/XM satellite radio has been my mainstay for well over a decade now. I have it in all my cars and I stream it constantly at home over my Wi-Fi connection to my wireless speakers. I literally cannot remember the last time I tuned in to a terrestrial radio station.

Well over 100 channels of crystal-clear commercial-free music. Well worth the $10/month (I pay an annual fee that works out to about that per device). And there is a fairly large selection of news/talk stations if you don't mind the commercials. And I haven't listened to one second of Howard Stern (another talking point of the anti-satellite radio crowd).

Some of my favorite stations are The Loft, Outlaw Country, Yacht Rock, Willie's Roadhouse, Deep Tracks, Classic Vinyl, Lithium, 1st Wave and at least a dozen or so others. I'm sure there's a few hip hop stations but I've never listed to them.

I even hate modern country music. I was in a store not long ago and modern CW music was playing. All I made out on one song was someone whinying through his nose saying “Awl you have ta do is put a drank in mah hayn.”

Give me some Bob Wills or Spade Cooley, Hoyle Nix any day! Found a CD of good old 1940-’50s country music like I grew up on! I love good old County Boogie Woogie!

But then I still have my good old vinyl of Marty Robins and Buck Owens from long ago. Wish I could find a stackable turntable.

“Ugh.

I hate that crappy noise.

It all sounds like war drums from old Tarzan movies.”

Reminds me of swinging vines.

“What happened to Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Tschaikowsky?

What happened to Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Raphael?

What happened to Shakespeare, Goethe, Milton, Heine, Dante, Petrarch, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky?”

Modern day democrats happened.

***Keep in mind that the quality of vinyl has completely greatly over the past few years***

I wish I could find a modern stackable turntable. All LP records of popular music only last about 15-20 minutes on each side. With a stackable turntable I can work for two hours without having to turn the LP records over.
Some of my Opera LPs have several disks, and are set up for stackable turntables. No fun to listen to one side, then hunt through sevrral trying to find the next side in line.

“Rap hip hop will always have limited appeal. Are those millennial going to grow old and sit around the assisted living center reminiscing about their youth listening to that filth?”

Too many wannabes.

My first XM radio was a boom box. It was great. I could carry it around the house, in the car, everywhere. I finally had to stop using it because the LCD was no longer readable.

I now have a little refurbished unit that XM sent for free. It plugs into the house stereo system.

***It’s just that the Orcs don’t appreciate such things. ***

Years ago, a used bookstore had a problem with teens and bums loitering in the doorway of their building. They found the best way to drive the loiterers off was to play classical music, not loud, but just enough to irritate their r&r hip-hop sensibilities.
