If Drake looks smug and Dave Grohl looks a little stricken in the photos above, there's a good reason: Nielsen tracking indicates hip-hop and R&B have officially become the most dominant form of popular music in the United States for the first time ever.
As HuffPo reports, the reason for hip-hop's supremacy25 percent of the retail music market over 23 percent for rockmay not be a big surprise.
The reason for hip-hop and R&B overtaking rock is simple: online streaming. When it comes to album sales, rock continues to dominate, claiming 43 percent of physical album sales and 37 percent of digital album sales.
But R&B and hip-hop have come to utterly dominate the online streaming market, where they make up 29 percent of all songs streamed online ― thats almost the exact same amount as rock and pop combined.

You can add classical operatic composers to your list.
That’s why white music execs loved rap. It was cheap to produce and the artists were disposable. Just bring in the next ‘flavor of the month’. Huge profits. That’s why rap and hip hop was dumped on by the record companies.
How does that differ from heavy metal, or death metal, or oldies rock?
>>But their names AND music or written talents will be forever. Not so the composers you hear now.<<
True. So True.
The same is true for legendary rock stars (which sadly are falling like well, rocks).
cRap “artists” are disposable, just like their works (beat poetry, NOT music).
As is jazz and blues!
I did kind of like this, though.... Woman...Whoooah Man.

“Same goes for Techno.”
Absolutely. Primal beats for chicks who want to be thought of as “in the scene”.
I just can’t get over these people worshipping these DJs onstage thinking they’re like bleedin’ Jimmy Page. “Ohhhhhh I going to press this button......I’m so talented!”
Well, I guess when you’re a brainless stripper type the $27,000 average salary earned by a DJ seems like big bucks.
How do they differ differ? Not all that much, although at least a low level of musicianship is generally required for the genres you mention. But, you can’t go farther into the shallow end of the gene pool than Hip Hop and Rap.

I thought this happened a few decades ago
And of course, there aren't many differing opinions about artists, are there... 8~)
But now we're getting beyond the hip hop realm.
I didn’t do 22 years as a professional musician by just listening to hip hop.
I know Paul Desmond ‘The Whisperer’, and Oscar Peterson ‘Fastest octaves in the world’. So try again.
Dead to whom?
Of course you didn’t do 22 years as a professional musician by listening to just Hip Hop. No one said otherwise. I don’t need to try anything again.
I would agree that they are “artists”, but of the “con” variety. There are differing opinions in all kinds of fields. Some differences are defensible, and others aren’t. If someone wanted to claim that Mozart was a better composer than Bach, it could be reasonably argued, although I would take the Bach side. If, on the other hand, someone were to argue that Bach didn’t understand how to use counterpoint effectively in his composing, the opinion is indefensible. “Rappers” aren’t “artists” or musicians. It’s astonishing what slick marketing into a rotting culture can get people to swallow. If a rapper stood in front of you practicing his “art” it wouldn’t be all that different from the noises emanating from the primate house at the zoo.
