Picturesque island is on the market but horrific past may put off potential buyers

Ever fancied owning your own island?

How about this little beauty off the south-west coast of Scotland?

The picturesque island of Little Ross Island has gone on the market and could be all yours for just £325,000.

However, its haunting past may scare off would-be buyers.

Little Ross made headlines nearly 60 years ago when lighthouse keeper Hugh Clark was murdered by a colleague.

Two visitors discovered Mr Clark's body in 1960 and his assistant Robert Dickson was found guilty of his murder .

Dickson was initially sentenced to hang for the murder, but his punishment was later changed to life imprisonment.

The tower, designed by Alan Stevenson, was built in 1843 to close the gap between other lighthouses at the Mull of Galloway and Southerness and remained manned until the murder over a century later.

The 19th-century, fully automated lighthouse is not included in the sale It is now owned and managed by the Commissioners for Northern Lighthouses who make regular maintenance visits to the property throughout the year.

For those who aren't put off by its horror past, the island offers tranquility and isolation far from the hustle and bustle of big cities.

The new owners will only be able to access the island via private boat or helicopter The 29-acre island, off the south-west coast of Scotland, is up for sale for around the same price as a two-bedroom flat in Edinburgh city centre.

The listing includes a six bedroom, B-listed cottage and courtyard.

"Private islands rarely come up for sale at an affordable price and particularly one with a habitable house and additional properties.

"Given the exciting prospect Little Ross Island presents, we expect a lot of interest from all over the UK as well as abroad."

You could fix up the barn pretty easily. Just cut down a couple of trees for timber and you...oh, wait. Wait, I think I see a problem here...

The big problem would be having to bring in all your suplies by boat. I would also check the fresh water supply on the island.

The island is pretty devoid of trees. It's a shame because Scotland used to be heavily forested. When the Romans tried to conquer Scotland the massive, deep, dark, Caledonian Forest gave them the creeps.

Yeah, as soon as I looked at it, I was thinking that there is no way I could live somewhere where trees won’t grow.

Oh Lordy. When did a simple murder start imbuing a “horror past”. Hyperbole hyperbole. Everything is subjected to hyperbole.

Ireland was also once heavily forested.

Not a bad place for $428,000.

In San Francisco, this is what $428,000 buys you:

I would imagine that if the English had not developed coal mining and America oil drilling to power the industrial revolution that New England’s forests would be long gone and it would look a lot like Scotland, a grassy, rocky wasteland.
