The Navy's newest, most sophisticated aircraft carrier doesn't have urinals

Amid all its upgrades and advances, the US Navy's newest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, is lacking one feature: urinals.

Every bathroom on the Ford is, for the first time, gender-neutral, equipped with flush toilets and stalls, according to Navy Times.

Bathroom-design experts have said sit-down toilets are less sanitary and take up more space, and most of the Ford's crew members are men. (Women are only about 18% of the Navy.)

But the Navy has said getting rid of urinals has advantages for current and future operations.

Making every bathroom accessible to all of the ship's sailors will make things more convenient for sailors, the Navy has said. And bathrooms that can be used by either gender mean the Navy can reassign them without making any design changes, should the crew's makeup change.

In the 688 class, there are no toilets or urinals in the engineroom. However, there are drains in ERLL aft between the condensers at a convenient elevation. (And that’s all that I will admit in public.)

It is a great blessing to watchstanders to have a urinal near the bridge.

They can't pee into a toilet?

Sit to pee?

Rarely, and only due to the presence of Waves.

If it’s convenience you want, just have the sailors pee off the deck…or would that be too gender specific for the new pansy Navy?

(Women are only about 18% of the Navy.)

That isn’t exactly the percentage of women on a deployed ship. I think that stat is “hush hush”.

On one boat I worked on, at the top of the stairs to my office, there was a low deep sink for mops. It was very convenient, I must say.

Did you ever make little paper boats, light them on fire and launch them upstream of your shipmates?

I’ve heard of that. Have you ever swam to Baltimore?

That ain't a bathroom, it's a HEAD. That ain't a wall, it's a BULKHEAD. That ain't a stairway, it's a LADDER. That ain't a room, it's a COMPARTMENT. That ain't a floor, it's a DECK. That ain't a ceiling, it's an OVERHEAD. That ain't a hallway, it's a PASSAGEWAY. That ain't a candy store, it's a GEDUNK.

If I hear you screw up our ship's terms again, I'm gonna throw you out that little round window over there!

My wife’s nephew is a nuclear engineer and a newly minted ensign on a sub somewhere. Next time I see him I’ll ask him the current state of ‘turlits’.

Loose lips sink ships!

One thing that women fail to understand is that the seat is on a hinge and goes both up and down. Why is it always the man’s duty to put the seat down?

"One thing that women fail to understand is that the seat is on a hinge and goes both up and down. Why is it always the man’s duty to put the seat down?"

True ... very true.

However, my wife did come up with what I can consider to be valid reasoning on her part, even though I know she's joking ...

She has stated that she doesn't like to put the seat down because she doesn't feel safe.

I asked her if she felt faint or dizzy, because I do know that she has a blood pressure problem.

She said, no, because then she has to bend over ...

...and she doesn't always know where I am at any given time.

...

...

At least ... I think she's joking, although she does have a valid point.

Ballpark—length waiting in women’s line versus men’s line. Hazard a guess why the men’s line runs 3 times faster.
