The Racial and Religious Paranoia of Trump's Poland Speech
The Atlantic ^ | July 6, 2017 | Peter Beinart

Posted on 07/07/2017 7:18:56 AM PDT by Ouchthatonehurt

In his speech in Poland on Thursday, Donald Trump referred 10 times to “the West” and five times to “our civilization.” His white nationalist supporters will understand exactly what he means. It’s important that other Americans do, too.

The West is not a geographic term. Poland is further east than Morocco. France is further east than Haiti. Australia is further east than Egypt. Yet Poland, France, and Australia are all considered part of “The West.” Morocco, Haiti, and Egypt are not.

The West is not an ideological or economic term either. India is the world’s largest democracy. Japan is among its most economically advanced nations. No one considers them part of the West.

The West is a racial and religious term. To be considered Western, a country must be largely Christian (preferably Protestant or Catholic) and largely white. Where there is ambiguity about a country’s “Westernness,” it’s because there is ambiguity about, or tension between, these two characteristics. Is Latin America Western? Maybe. Most of its people are Christian, but by U.S. standards, they’re not clearly white. Are Albania and Bosnia Western? Maybe. By American standards, their people are white. But they are also mostly Muslim.

I am reading the real thing.
I’m reading exactly what my enemies are thinking and planning ... straight from the source.

You can put your head in the sand if you want. I don’t intend to.

The Greeks may not have wanted to admit it, but the Hebrews made significant contributions to what became Western culture.

When they are confused and confusing, it doesn’t help. That’s putting your head in the sand.

No, Jerusalem is in the East. The term “West” was used by the ancient Greeks to distinguish Europe from Asia(ie the Middle East). Ancient Israel was most certainly the kind of culture that the Greeks had in mind when they drew a distinction between themselves and Middle Eastern peoples.

Ancient Israel was the one and only genuine Theocracy that has ever existed. It was governed and regulated by Divine Law. The same Divine Law, if observed today, would make Greco-Roman sophistry and "enlightenment" rationalism completely unnecessary. Unfortunately, the Left's declaration of war on "the west" has made it a conservative idol.

There were ten generations from Adam to Noah. Were they "eastern" or "western?" There were ten generations from Noah to Abraham--same question. There were six generations from Abraham to Moses--ditto.

I believe it was Tertulian who once asked "What Athens to do with Jerusalem?"

The American (and world), largely thanks to the Left, has caught race fever. Maybe I should just give up trying to fight it.

As for me, my loyalty is to HaShem.

I’m not confused.
I don’t need information curated for me ... by anyone.

I’ll should give you $10 bucks to find something better to post.

What's your problem? Isn't this a site where articles from all locations are posted for discussion?

If you're only hoping for pink ponies to discuss, good luck.............Sheesh!

Did he go to public school and learn any of the basics? By West we mean nations that embraced free enterprise and freedom of conscience and speech. That was what was Europe in various stages, the UK, and the ultimate birth of the free nations of the commonwealth and the USA. Later, we might add Japan and others, as they also successfully embraced such principles. If he had any clue, he would see that the 20th century lifted up southeast asia from poverty, the great success story of that century.

"Someone got paid to write this tripe?"

I started to read it and you couldn't pay me enough to finish it.

Wading through to the end of this tedious mass of drivel would be like wading barefoot through the La Brea tar pits in California.

India is the world’s largest democracy. Japan is among its most economically advanced nations. No one considers them part of the West.

India became a democracy in 1950. Japan became an economic power after after WWII. I'd say the West had a great deal to do with both events.
