THE Godfather has pipped The Empire Strikes Back to be voted greatest movie of all time.
The 1972 Mafia epic that starred Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone topped a poll by film mag Empire of 20,000 readers.
At third was Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman film The Dark Knight, for which Heath Ledger won an Oscar for his performance as The Joker.
The Shawshank Redemption came fourth, despite often being hailed best-ever film online.
La La Land — released six months ago — came 62nd.

I must seek that one out. Did you like How Green Was My Valley, set in Wales? And from the big island to the west, Waking Ned Devine and The Secret of Roan Inish.
Ugh, ‘Easy Rider’ and those pretentious dirty hippies.
But at least it has a happy ending.
I hadn’t heard of “The Giant Claw”. Sure enough, a good quality print is available in full on YouTube. I sampled some the movie. Exceptional.
Speaking of Billy Bob, loved him in Sling Blade.

No, it was perfection. To appreciate Fellini, you must imagine you are inside one of his dreams. Amarcord was a string of his childhood memories and vignettes, with WWII and the Fascisti lurking in the background of the late '30s countryside to persecute the simple villagers, who put on the brave face and carried on their dramatic, earthy and insouciant lifestyles as if nothing was going to go horribly wrong.

We mostly agree except for Brando. Whereas Pacino was unlucky as far as awards go, Brando got lucky.
He got top billing in spite of the story mainly being about another character. The novel was an unexpected runaway bestseller. He was surrounded by top talent in acting and directing who weren’t yet recognized at the time.
The best part of Brando’s character was the costume and makeup. He was only 47 at the time but a still photograph would never indicate it. Other than that it was all mumbling, cotton, and cue cards. His career was already in decline for many years (Brando was fortunate that he was the director’s favorite pick for whatever strange reason.) He was working mainly for money, full of himself, and a crazy Democrat who long stopped putting much effort into his acting.
Most of those are ridiculous but I’d find it hard to argue against The Godfather.

They were Spanish army tanks. As were the CASA 1112’s filling in for HE-111 bombers. Okay, maybe Spanish Air Force. The movie was shot in Spain.
Haven’t you heard? It’s racist/sexist/xenophobic/homophobic/Yankeephobic/polarizing/culturally appropriating with bad Southern accents, etc etc etc.

Reminds me a bit of Disney’s “Song of the South”.
Not that we would see that movie on a list of all time greats, but your post reminds me, that Disney has locked up that movie and has never released it on home video in the US, nor shown it on the Disney Channel, or allowed it to be shown in theaters in decades.
And it’s all due to political correctness. Uncle Remus and the plantation workers were too stereotypical; they were not portrayed as angry resentful workers. The movie is set in the Reconstruction era, after slavery.
This makes me think, as we talk of greatest movies of all time, how many old movies have not been seen by today’s younger people, because they just aren’t available on home video, not on TV, not on the internet anywhere?? Which means also, that younger people have no basis for comparison, if they have never seen or even heard of, some great old movies which aren’t up to today’s PC standards.
I used to enjoy the old Charlie Chan movies, but those movies are almost never on TV anymore. Same story, they aren’t meeting today’s politically correct standards and thus are banned by today’s censors.
That really gets me, because there is so much explicit sex and nudity and other material such as pushing homosexuality, which shock some of us, and that’s ok for today’s Hollywood. But old movies and TV shows which are deemed not PC are simply banned by today’s programmers.
Yes, these days when they show a “classic” movie, it’s 25 years old.
I have clothes and linens older than that.
