If you watch the video it appears the phase "viciously beating him" is a bit of an overstatement. It looks like the owner got in a few good licks in before the car thief got up and ran away.

The owner eventually cut in front of Ephraim Diaz, who was behind the wheel of his car, and beat him in the street in a vicious confrontation captured on film.

Northern New Jersey is not a place to screw around. Folks up that end of the state are not particularly showy and noisy about being tough like New Yorkers tend to be. Do something stupid like this and you'd better hope the cops get you first because we'll just quietly kick the crap out of you.
