In a way, it’s kind of too bad that this needs to be a news story rather than the natural conclusion to the problem

"...before viciously beating him"
If you watch the video it appears the phase "viciously beating him" is a bit of an overstatement. It looks like the owner got in a few good licks in before the car thief got up and ran away.
To: Morgana
when he spotted his stolen Honda Civic on the road and started following it, police said. The owner eventually cut in front of Ephraim Diaz, who was behind the wheel of his car, and beat him in the street in a vicious confrontation captured on film.
beat him in the street for a Honda Civic?????
Was it gold plated???

Northern New Jersey is not a place to screw around. Folks up that end of the state are not particularly showy and noisy about being tough like New Yorkers tend to be. Do something stupid like this and you'd better hope the cops get you first because we'll just quietly kick the crap out of you. Just remember Jersey is where New York wiseguys come to dump the bodies.

I’d beat someone if they stole my 1973 Ford Pinto.

Bayonne? That’s in the Universal Fart isn’t it? Seems like I recall people joking about eau du Bayonne.

beat him in the street for a Honda Civic????? Given the people I've known from Jersey, any excuse is enough.

"Id beat someone if they stole my 1973 Ford Pinto." Don't worry, after driving it for a couple a blocks, the thief would turn around and return it!

Chief: How?
Harry Callahan: Cause he looks too damn good, that's how!

I was telling my son and a friend that I often leave the car running and door wide open on my Pontiac Vibe to see some piece of human debris try to steal it and fail.
It’s a manual.

You may not believe it but Pintos are collectible vehicles now. They’re starting to get expensive, the well-kept, unmolested ones are at least. The holy grail of Pintos is a loaded Pinto Squire wagon with 4 speed manual, 1971-1973. The 2.0 litter engine is regarded as superior and those federally mandated big bumpers are thought to have hurt the looks of them compared to the slim ones they had in those first three years.
To: crazy scenario
It’s his car he paid for it.
