Armed protesters at Hermann Park defend Sam Houston statue

Hundreds of protesters, some of them armed, gathered at Hermann Park Saturday in an attempt to defend the honor of Sam Houston. Carrying Texas and Confederate flags, participants seemed concerned the park's Sam Houston statue might be removed since the historical figure owned slaves.

"Erasing history for the sake of political correctness or to make somebody feel better, it's not just stupid — it's dangerous," said David Amad, an organizer of the demonstration.

He certainly saw the future very clearly.

IIRC Houston had owned slaves and opposed abolition. But he accurately thought that secession would only end in disaster and he would not support it.

A complex man with a fascinating history. Governor of two states and President of a country.

So he owned slaves but was willing to give them up to join the north?

There was no need.

The only thing on the table at that point was if they were going hold off admitting free territories into the union as states until an equal number of slave territories could be invented to keep the "balance."

This was a matter for the congress.

But the election of a president that the slave states did not control was apparently cause for hysteria.

If I was able to, I would defend the North with my life as a Yankee. Contrarily,I will defend keeping the heritage of our country which includes the South. Why is it now that I have such strong feelings for the South? We are inching to another Civil War.

Wow. I’m learning a truck full of info today!!

Come to think of it, I now don’t remember why the south seceded.

Though I think they saw the storm coming either way within a few years, no?

And led any army that defeated Mexico and won Texas’ independence.

On top of that a Congressman, and a U.S. Senator.

Had he been US president in the 1850’s we may have avoided the Civil War.

“Had he been US president in the 1850’s we may have avoided the Civil War.”

I think a good case could be made for that. And I’d include the 1860 election as well.

Amen. We have one flag in America. And that’s the flag our men and women have defended and are defending today. It’s the flag that was attacked on Dec.7th. , 1941 and on Sept. 11,2001. And it’s the flag our Marines raised on Mt. Surabachi in Feb. of 1945. It’s The Stars And Stripes.

If you’ve never heard of Sam Houston, your educators are the ones who should be embarrassed. (If you were raised in America, that is).

At least some good things can happen in Houston. Those guys must be from Katy or someplace else though.

Houston proper has become mostly metrosexual.

I have to PIN THIS ONE on me.

Had great history teachers and courses at private schools.

The chances that I forgot the name are 10000 percent!!!

Could blame it on head injury but more likely the years have just taken some memories from the head.

Probably not a huge hero up north :)

Prescient statement that speaks a truth many seem to not be aware of....

He was a fascinating guy. He knew Texas was doomed as an independent nation so worked like mad to get it into the Union.

But as Civil War loomed, he suggested that the best option for Texas was independence as a sovereign nation under the Lone Star flag, because he knew the Confederacy was doomed.

They scream Pasadena/Deer Park to me. People in Katy don’t fly the Confederate Flag, because that would be rude to the Nigerian oil execs down the street and we want their kids to go to VBS at Second Baptist.
