The Trump administration has approved tens of thousands of temporary amnesties for illegal immigrant Dreamers, according to numbers released Thursday that underscore a major reversal for President Trump.
The decision has enraged the presidents conservative base, which hoped he would make good on his promise to revoke the policy, known in governmentspeak as DACA.
But immigrant rights advocates, who were harshly critical of Mr. Trump during the campaign, said he deserves some credit for defying his right wing and keeping the program intact.
I definitely think that he does deserve credit for continuing a very successful program for young people who grew up here, said Cesar Vargas, a Dreamer who is now a practicing lawyer.
Mr. Trump appears to be maintaining the pace of the Obama administration, with more than 17,000 new two-year amnesties and more than 107,000 renewal applications approved from Jan. 1 to March 30. Both numbers are comparable to the final full three months of President Obamas tenure.
All told, some 780,000 Dreamers have been granted DACA status under the 2012 program, amounting to a 92 percent approval rate. DACA protects against deportation for two years and grants work permits and entitles the immigrants to benefits such as drivers licenses and some tax credits.

Anti-Trumpers hit hardest. Doesn’t it just tick you off?
What are the chances that Trump won’t fix this before leaving office?
Nobody’s enraged.
Really? Maybe you aren’t but I don’t like being lied to. Especially since immigration was my , and I’m sure many others, number 1 reason for voting for him.
A politician lied to you??? Well imagine that.
“Nobodys enraged.”
Feels like betrayal to me.
When will there be an Amnesty for Americans?
Millions of Americans violated far less serious laws before they were adults, yet no general Amnesty has been advanced for them.
Guess citizens are just dirt, right?
You can say these “children” (they’re ALL adults) did nothing of their own volition.
But it isn’t true. Lots of them crossed illegally on their own as teen agers. So we let them stay? It should be enough that they aren’t prosecuted.
I guess you didn’t watch every one of President Trump’s speeches, as I did. He clearly stated that he was going to prioritize on violent felons and gangs. He said, over and over again, that when we got down to the “Dreamers”, we would work something out. This is what that promise looks like. Live with it.
Trump will pick his fights on his terms. Right now, the so-called Dreamer amnesty that Obama decreed by EO in 2012 is supported by the majority of the public, which is uninformed about the issue. And there are plenty of Reps who want to have their own version of the Dreamer program.
Trump will end the program during watch. Just not right now.
Oh I’m not shocked. I always expect it. Lol
Disappointing ....
It’s all part of the Art of the Deal.
If it’s “temporary” I don’t see the problem, since it means they can be deported later. I don’t think the President is interested in a fight over DREAMERs when he only just recently dealt with the Paris agreement and is still resolving the Comey fiasco.
I’m just SUUUURE that all our nice Mehhiccans will now vote for him surely.................
..............really, I am. I think.
But I'll keep an eye on it.
Tell it. And those were the best lies, the biggest lies, with the best words.
You’re right, I remember it as you do.
Let’s start by deporting lawyers who are in the country illegally. That ought to poll north of 70%.
